The Iron Man Trilogy: 3 Things Each Movie Did Better Than The Others

While fans speculate about whether Batman or Iron Man would win in a fight and what Sherlock Holmes 3 will be like, Robert Downey Jr. keeps starting in more and more great movies. By far, however, his most outstanding role was that of Tony Stark in the MCU.

Though all of Tony Stark's appearances were great, his own trilogy is the one that gives him the attention he deserves - though there are obvious differences in the quality of these movies. Here are 3 Things Each Movie Did Better Than The Others In The Iron Man Trilogy.

9 Iron Man 3: PTSD

Iron Man 3 has been criticized for its villain plot twist, but almost nobody can deny the fact that Tony Stark is not quite a hero in this film - and that's not a bad thing. He makes numerous mistakes and needs the help of a random boy, his best friend, and his girlfriend to get him out of trouble.

What's more, Tony suffers from PTSD after the attack on New York City organized by Loki. He has regular panic attacks but doesn't get any help which only results in more problems. It is quite rare that blockbusters touch upon such topics, so Iron Man 3 stands out of the crowd.

8 Iron Man 2: Father-Son Relationship

Every Iron Man movie deals with Tony's relationship with his father in some way, but Iron Man 2 undoubtedly does it better than anything else. Tony has to confront his memories about his father and realize that he wasn't perfect - not that Tony didn't hate him to some extent before that.

Nevertheless, this is when Tony also realizes that his father genuinely loved his son and wanted to pass on his legacy to Tony. Howard is also the one who gives Tony an idea that saves Tony's life curing his health problems because of the arc reactor set in his chest.

7 Iron Man: CGI

All the MCU movies have outstanding CGI. You could even say that these movies are the ones setting the standard for the industry, though there are undoubtedly many other films with visuals that are just as stunning. Yet, the film that started it all has by far one of the best examples of what good effects should look like.

The first movie was created during the times when CGI wasn't as advanced as it is now (and wasn't as affordable). This is why the Iron Man suit was partly built and worn by Downey (in the rest of the MCU, the suit is almost entirely CGI). Because of it being an actual suit, it looks pretty damn good to this day.

6 Iron Man 3: Harley Keener

Child characters are perhaps some of the most adorable characters in the MCU. Harley Keener was the first child character introduced in the MCU followed by Baby Groot at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy and then Cassie Lang in the first Ant-Man movies.

But what's important about Harley - and other child characters in the MCU - is that they are crucial to the story. If Tony hadn't met Harley when his suit was broken, he probably wouldn't have made it back as fast and maybe even wouldn't be able to get back on track.

5 Iron Man 2: Black Widow

Speaking of great characters, Black Widow first appears in Iron Man 2 and she is totally worth it. Not only is it a perfect introduction for Natasha Romanoff, but it is also a pleasant addition to Tony's character who develops a unique friendship with her.

Another reason why Natasha is so important for the story is that she indirectly helps Tony realize how much he loves Pepper while also introducing him to Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. teaching Tony that there are things much bigger than him and that the world must be protected at all cost.

4 Iron Man: Romance

Did you notice that Tony doesn't kiss Pepper until Iron Man 2? Nevertheless, the seeds for their relationship are planted in the first movie which is why the romantic storyline here can be rightfully considered the best out of the whole trilogy.

There are two key scenes that establish the romance between Tony and Pepper. The first one is the dance scene when Tony really pays attention to Pepper for the first time after seeing her out of work. The other scene is the one when Tony is rescued from the desert and meets Pepper who has been seemingly crying.

3 Iron Man 3: Friendship

There are a few characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who are so close to Tony that they are practically family. One of them is his best friend James Rhodes - or simply "Rhodey". Though he features prominently in most movies Tony appears in, their friendship is best shown in Iron Man 3.

As mentioned earlier, this is the movie where Tony constantly needs the help of the people around him. In the climax, Rhodey is the one who has his back when Tony doesn't have a suit to protect him. The two of them work together to make their plan a success.

2 Iron Man 2: Death

Something that is bound to happen in a universe full of superheroes and supervillains is death. Iron Man 2 seems to handle this complex theme quite well.

First, there is the death of Tony's parents that happened years ago yet still manages to haunt Tony to this day. He has to accept the harsh truths of his deceased father. Next, there is the death of Ivan Vanko's father which motivates Vanko to get revenge. And finally, there is Tony's own death that appears to be inevitable throughout the majority of the film.

1 Iron Man: Origin Story

As probably any fan would note, a well-executed origin story is probably the most important element of their entire character. If the superhero is not established properly, then it is very hard to follow their story and route for them during their struggles and the challenges they face.

Luckily, Tony Stark gets an almost flawless origin story in Iron Man. We see his character grow during the movie becoming a more considerate person. We also see that he is not untouchable or immortal - he makes mistakes that almost cost him his life. But he also gets to demonstrate his strong sides, especially his invaluable intellect.
