The Troop Updates: Release Date & Story Info | Screen Rant

The Troop, a horror novel by author Nick Cutter, is set to become a movie thanks to producer James Wan, and here's what we know so far. While Wan is best known as a director, and to a lesser extent a writer, he's also been quite active as a producer and executive producer since the early stages of his career. He's produced all the Saw, Insidious, and Conjuring sequels and spinoffs, which is no surprise, since he created or co-created those franchises.

Wan has also produced Lights Out, the short-lived but beloved DC Universe series Swamp Thing, CBS' MacGyver reboot, and an upcoming movie reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise, along with an adaptation of Stephen King's The Tommyknockers. Wan is a busy man, but he seems to love that fact, constantly signing on to new projects via his Atomic Monster production company. Now, The Troop shall be counted among the ranks of Wan-produced film and TV projects.

As with many of Wan's projects, information on The Troop isn't exactly overflowing, as he tends to value secrecy around his work. Still, we're not entirely bereft of knowledge on The Troop's movie adaptation, so here's what we know so far.

It was announced in August 2019 that James Wan's Atomic Monster production company was set to make a movie adaptation of author Nick Cutter's horror novel The Troop. E.L. Katz, helmer of the indie horror flick Cheap Thrills, is set to direct the project. Katz also directed several episodes of Syfy's extremely creepy anthology series Channel Zero, and most notably, worked with Wan on an episode of Swamp Thing. Unfortunately, there have been no further updates since August, and there's been no release date confirmed yet for The Troop. That said, there's no reason to believe the film isn't still being worked on.

The Troop's script is being written by the duo of Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald, who are also set to pen DC's upcoming horror-centric Aquaman spinoff The Trench, which Wan will also produce. At this early stage, we don't know how close Gardner and Fitzgerald's script will stick to Nick Cutter's book, but The Troop novel concerns a yearly camping trip into the Canadian wilderness for a scout leader and his troop. This time, the trip goes horribly wrong when a terrifying alien disease is introduced to their group, leading to a battle for their very lives, both against the infection and each other.
