NBC's Parks and Recreation is perhaps one of the best modern sitcoms of the 2000s. Featuring an ensemble cast including Amy Poehler and Chris Pratt, it is cited as one of the best workplace comedies ever created. It was created by Greg Daniels and Michael Schur, known for perhaps the most famous workplace comedy, The Office, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, among others.
The show is one of the most wholesome sitcoms you will ever watch, and besides comedy, it is filled with deep, emotional moments. So, here are 5 times Parks and Rec was heartbreaking and 5 times it was heartwarming.
10 Heartwarming - April and Andy's Wedding
April and Andy's relationship was very cute and had its sweet moments, like their wedding. The couple decides to surprise everyone and decide to get married in their living room, during a fancy dinner party they had hosted for all their friends.
Their vows were also very sweet and heartwarming - April says she hates most things, but she can never seem to hate Andy (typical April), and Andy vows to protect her from danger and to always fight for her, even if it's a bear.
9 Sad - Ben and Leslie's Break Up
Ben and Leslie's relationship is yet another great one that had a bit of a rough patch. When Leslie is chosen to run for City Council, she has to break up with Ben, her boss, so as to prevent a potential scandal. While it was amicable, it ran deeper than that.
Ben and Leslie had a falling out after breaking up as Ben wanted some distance between them and Leslie wanted them to try and be friends, which she realized was selfish on her part.
8 Heartwarming - Ron's Birthday "Party"
When it's Ron's birthday, Leslie gets him a remote-operated closing door for his office, and leads him to believe she will be throwing him a massive birthday party, as she did for Ann (karaoke and face painting? Awesome!)
However, turns out it's just a misdirect - she got him a steak dinner for one, whiskey, and his favorite movies, to be enjoyed alone. It was extremely sweet to see Leslie throw him a "Ron Swanson Birthday Party".
7 Sad - Ben's Hometown
When Leslie and Ben go to Partridge, Minnesota, Ben's hometown, they expect a reconciliation from the people from his home, but the mayor (played by the iconic J.K. Simmons) had invited Ben to humiliate him in front of all the residents.
It was quite sad to see that the residents of his hometown still hated him for trying to build Ice Town (a winter-themed sports complex)when he was elected mayor at 18 years of age, which bankrupted the town.
6 Heartwarming - Leslie Wins The City Council Elections
After Leslie seemingly loses the city council elections, it turns out that a recount of the votes was to be done. Thankfully, she wins the elections this time around, and her winning was a great moment as it had been her childhood dream.
Leslie finally completing her dream of getting in the city council was quite tough, but she had finally done it. She breaks down crying, and it's an extremely emotional moment, with Amy Poehler's amazing acting really conveying Leslie's happiness.
5 Sad - Pawnee Recalls Leslie
After Leslie completes one year as a City Councillor, the people of Pawnee ask for a recall election to remove Leslie from Office, led by restaurant owners angry at Leslie for establishing the Soda Tax.
At the recall vote, Leslie loses and is removed from Office. It's heartbreaking to see the people of Pawnee, for whose lives Leslie is working hard to improve, hate Leslie and remove her as a City Councillor, which also extremely upsets Leslie and her friends.
4 Heartwarming - Chris Gives Ben A Wedding Present
Before Ben and Leslie's wedding, Chris gave him a framed letter that had ordered them to audit Pawnee's government, all the way back in season 3. It was sweet to see Chris giving his buddy such a nice and thoughtful gift.
Even more emotional is when Chris says, "We were supposed to be here eight weeks. I’m so happy that those eight weeks turned into three years, and that you met Leslie, and that we both found a home.”
3 Sad - Ann and Chris Leave
After Ann and Chris decide to move to Ann Arbor, Michigan to raise a family, Leslie gets her the perfect goodbye gift - breaking ground on Lot 48, the lot behind Ann's house, to but turned into a park, which started their friendship.
It was extremely heartbreaking to see Ann and Leslie say goodbye to each other, especially with the amazing acting and expressions by Amy Poehler and Rashida Jones. Ann leaving left a huge hole that could never be filled.
2 Heartwarming - Donna and Tom Inviting Ben to a Treat Yo' Self
While Ben and Leslie both have a tough time being broken up, Ben takes it extremely hard. He is very upset and is quite depressed about it, something Donna and Tom notice. Donna decides to invite Ben to their annual Treat Yo' Self Day.
They help Ben win his confidence and forget his worries, even if it is for just a day. They encourage him to buy something he wouldn't normally get, so he picks a Batman costume. It was sweet to see Donna and Tom being so supportive of Ben and his inner nerd.
1 Sad - Leslie and Ron's Fight
In season 7, it is revealed that Leslie and Ron had been in a fight over the time jump of 3 years. Turns out, Ron had started his own construction company and taken a contract called Morningstar, which included demolishing Ann's former house.
However, it turns out Ron had asked Leslie to meet at JJ's Diner, which she had stood up, forgetting it in the hustle-bustle of her new life. While it was quite sad, their fight was even worse, as they acted like they truly hated each other.
