The coronavirus continues to cause a negative impact on our world, which leaves citizens feeling hopelessly grim. In dire times like these, vulgar Bravo shows packed to the brim with ridiculousness and entertaining buffoonery are just what the doctor ordered, aka perfect timing for the Real Housewives of New York City to return!
Everyone's favorite housewife franchise has officially resurrected with the ladies back to their bad behaviors and silly antics, regardless of Queen Bethenny's absence. The season 12 premiere successfully delivered the promised goods and brought a new, younger, hip housewife onto the scene: Married to the Mob fashion designer Leah McSweeney, who Sonja Morgan calls a "tried-and-true real New Yorker." With a promising first episode in the books, let's take a look at the questions we have after watching the RHONY premiere.
9 Will The Ladies Thrive Without Bethenny?
While the Real Housewives usually move on from last season's ladies without even a mention, Bethenny Frankel is undoubtedly the biggest name in the history of the franchise, so her exit from the show couldn't go unnoticed. The opening scene of the premiere sets up each of the main housewives finding out Bethenny quit the show, with some of their reactions being perhaps a tad over-acted. While Sonja Morgan pleaded in discontent about Queen B's departure, Countess Luann de Lesseps rejoiced in relief.
In a recent interview with In The Know, OG housewife Ramona Singer said she felt like Bethenny overshadowed the other ladies, so her absence will give others a time to shine. Will the ladies bounce back without Bethenny, and could they even become better without her?
8 Now That She's "Lu & Improved" & Off Probation, Will Luann Keep Up Her Sobriety?
As shown in the RHONY premiere, Luann is finally off probation from her widely publicized court case involving a 2017 incident in Palm Springs where The Countess attacked a police officer while heavily intoxicated. Luann was placed on probation, forced to blow into a breathalyzer twice a day to prove her sobriety. Although she had at least one probation violation, Luann was formally released from probation in August 2019.
During a confessional/talking head of Luann's, The Countess showed an ounce of humanity when she admitted to the severity of her punishment, acknowledging that drinking could have landed her in jail. The Countess said she was continuing on a path of sobriety, saying she's "Lu and improved," but Luann's patterns of dishonesty cause viewers to question her true motives. Her fellow castmates and previous assistant have thrown daggers and whispers that Luann has been drinking the entire time. The RHONY season 12 trailer even has a scene where Luann purposefully sips an alcoholic drink, even after being warned by Ramona.
7 Will Dorinda & Luann Make Amends?
Dorinda Medley joined the cast of RHONY in season 7, though her presence makes it seem like she's been there from the start. Though Dorinda has her hilarious moments and possesses truly compassionate and charitable qualities, Dorinda's biggest downfall is her blind jealousy and inability to reel it in. Dorinda has picked apart several castmates over the years, and her current feud involves Luann and her over-the-top attitude about being a cabaret star.
Surprisingly, grudge-holder Dorinda let go of her previous resentments during her party in the premiere. She even held a dance-off to Luann's infamous song which throws shade at Dorinda's barking comments, "Feeling Jovani." While these two seem to be on the up and up, their shared volatility could easily come crashing down on this happy reconciliation.
6 Now That Tinsley's No Longer The New Girl, Will Leah Be The Ladies' Latest Punching Bag?
Tinsley Mortimer joined the cast of RHONY back in season 9 as Sonja's socialite friend who just returned to NYC looking for a new start. The bubbly blonde was forthcoming from the very beginning with her previous indiscretions, particularly regarding her arrest and embarrassing mugshot, which warmed her to the audience.
Tinsley sometimes comes off as a pushover, or too friendly for these cutthroat housewives, but also feels like the freshman in a sea of popular seniors. Since Leah will now be the go-to new girl, does Tinsley have a chance at getting more respect from the women? Regardless of whether or not they grant Tinsley more respect, Leah surely won't put up with being anyone's punching bag, unless it's in boxing class!
5 Ramona Cries About Being Lonely – Could She Eventually Get Back Together With Mario?
Despite her empowering season 12 tagline, "I don't need to find love, I love myself," Ramona is immediately shown to be crying over being lonely, bawling in a fit while she pleads "I don't want to be alone anymore... I want a man to hold me, to want me, to be with me, and I don't know if I'll ever find that again!" Ramona's friends try to give her a pep talk, encouraging her that she will find love again.
Ramona is particularly broken up over being single and over 60, and she is still processing and grieving over the divorce from her husband, Mario Singer, who she was happily married to for over 22 years. The RHONY housewife was completely blindsided when she found out about Mario's affair. Now that it's been several years since their split, Ramona and Mario have made amends for their daughter Avery, and the three are currently quarantining together at Mario's place in Flordia. Could this be the beginning of a reunification?
4 How Old Was Leah When She Had Her Daughter, Kier?
Aside from no longer being the new girl, Tinsley is also no longer the youngest housewife. At 44, Tinsley is seven years Leah's senior, who is arguably one of the youngest housewife's to date as just 37 years old. The viewers were not only introduced to Leah this episode, but her 12-year-old daughter Kier was also shown during a scene where the two get an afternoon treat.
That being said, Leah was only 22 years old when she gave birth to Keir, which makes her a lot younger of a mother than her fellow castmates. She's definitely perceived as the "cool mom," as she advised her daughter to "just be yourself, try your best, and don't let little b---hes f--k with you."
3 Will Tinsley's Two New Poodles Fill The Void She Has Over Desperately Wanting Children?
There have been lots of new changes in Tinsley's life as she enters the premiere, mainly her split from on-again-off-again boyfriend Scott Kluth (who she's currently engaged to), but also her two newest additions from her trip to China: Adorable poodles Strawberry and Shortcake.
Along with the two pooches, Tinsley's also seeing a new man named Bruce (though she "doesn't love the name") who happens to have children, which is the perfect practice for the desired mother-to-be. Funnily enough, Tinsley mentions treating Bruce's children like dogs and seems to be perfectly content with her quasi-stepmother role.
2 Team Dorinda Or Team Tinsley?
During the climax of the premiere, Tinsley and Dorinda get into a heated discussion over Dorinda's tendency to create conspiracy theories about Tinsley and her finances. Coming off last season's reunion where Dorinda literally accused Tinsley of being a whore, Tinsley is understandably guarded when approaching the former about her unjustified claims.
Dorinda refuses to recognize her misgivings and puts Tinsley in a lose-lose position. Tinsley recalls "if I'm not talking to her about something I'm hiding something, and if I try to pull her aside to have a private conversation, I'm fake. You know, I guess I just can't win." Needless to say, the verdict is Team Tinsley.
1 Is Tinsley Going To Be Late For The Kindergarten Bus?
Really though, what WAS that insult Dorinda tried to hurl at Tinsley? Sorry sweetie, but pointing out Tinsley's childish antics only reminds the viewers how much younger she is than you, so who is in the lose-lose position now?
All jokes aside, Bravoheads can finally exhale now that we're back on the saddle of the RHONY pony.
