Friends: 10 Weird Character Inconsistencies That No One Noticed

Throughout its incredible ten season lifespan, Friends was no stranger to a plentitude of continuity errors, basic mistakes, and inconsistencies. But because of how fun and compelling the characters' everyday lives were, it was easy to let these nitpicks slide. After all, Friends is one of the most beloved and successful sitcoms of all time, and the main cast of six characters is perhaps the biggest reason for this.

The characters are all great in their ways, and most of them undergo colossal development, but still to this day, some things about them do not make much sense. The more we think about these weird issues, the more we can't overlook them as we did before. So without further ado, here are 10 weird character inconsistencies of the Friends cast that we never really noticed before.

10 Phoebe & Her Relationships

Early on in Phoebe's relationship with Mike, there was a whole storyline involving Ross and the couple revolving around how Phoebe has never had a serious relationship. The issue is that she did have serious relationships.

While she and David did not last long in season one, they still said they loved each other. She even briefly moved in with Gary the Cop, which constitutes a serious relationship. Phoebe's concern runs contrary to what she was seen doing over the course of the show.

9 Phoebe's Financial Situation

Phoebe's financial situation has never made much sense. Fans know that she is a masseuse, and she remains so throughout the whole show, working briefly for a high-end chain. As decent as this job is, it's not exactly the highest paying career around.

And yet, Phoebe can afford an apartment in New York City on her own - even with Denise - which is a stretch, to say the least. Apart from the one time when she Rachel and Joey brought up their financial troubles to the group and right before Joey got her hired as an extra, she never is shown struggling for money, despite her rocky career status.

8 Ross & The Annulment

When Ross and Rachel get drunkenly married in Vegas, it leads to one of the wort and strangest things Ross has ever done: lying to Rachel about getting an annulment and keeping them married to avoid the embarrassment of having three divorces.

This is stupid for a whole host of reasons, but it is such a character inconsistency because immediately after they get married, Ross points out a divorce is not necessary since they can get an annulment. An annulment strikes the marriage from the records, so he would not be Ross "Three Divorce" Geller. Simply put, it's immensely stupid for Ross to think that he could get away with this.

7 Monica Thinking Chandler Has A Thing For Sharks

It is not often in the later seasons of Friends that a character gets worse writing treatment than Joey in terms of their intelligence. But when Monica believed Chandler was having some alone time to sharks, it marked one of the rare occasions.

What makes this a character inconsistency is that Monica is smart and she obviously know Chandler really well in that regard, so how does anything about this story (and an apparent shark fetish) make sense?

6 Phoebe Having An Issue With Frank & Alice

This inconsistency could apply to everyone but more so Phoebe, who takes strong opposition against her brother Frank and Alice getting together because of their wide age gap. What makes this strange is that Phoebe supported a similar relationship beforehand.

She was completely fine with Richard and Monica, despite their age difference. On top of that, she has dated much older men, such as the one who lost their phone. While her concern for her brother is understandable, her disapproval needed a lot more reason and weight.

5 Ross Having An Issue With Sandy

One of the worst things Ross does throughout the show is taking so much issue with and eventually firing his nanny Sandy for being a man.

Ross acts awfully, saying Sandy is too sensitive for a guy. That is pretty rich coming from the guy who admitted to listening to Kenny G in the bath and someone who on many occasions, gets shown to be sensitive. There's nothing wrong with being a bit emotional every now and then but apparently, Ross seems to forget that.

4 Monica's Messy Closet

This is a weird one because in one sense, it makes sense as everyone seems to have that one messy space, no matter their personality. After all, Monica does have some order to her mess. But in her specific case, the messy closet seems very out of place.

Monica is the same woman who could not sleep because of a shoe sitting out in the living room, and who has to have the bed made a specific way. She loves cleaning, organizing, and making things neat and tidy, so the whole closet and the mess in it is a little hard to believe.

3 Joey's Inability To Learn French

When Joey attempts to learn French from Phoebe, it is one of the worst and most frustrating episodes, stories, and overall pieces of writing in the entirety of Friends. Given some of the show's notable bumps along its otherwise seamless journey, that's saying something.

Joey is an actor. He once remembered an entire tour of the MET given to him by Ross and did not understand a word, but delivered it anyway - albeit in the wrong order, but he still deserve credit for some amazing memorization skills. Joey was not the stupid individual in early seasons as he was near the end, so what happened?

2 Chandler & Sports

In the later seasons of the show, Chandler is shown to be clueless about sports on a couple of occasions. Rachel recommends he watch ESPN for not knowing who some sports stars were, and he reveals that he only watches the Thanksgiving American football game to avoid cooking, not because he actually likes sports.

But in early seasons, Chandler plays multiple sports on multiple occasions, from American football to basketball to softball. Alongside that, he attends many New York team games with Joey and Ross, and generally always was into sports. How he suddenly lost interest in something he obviously cares about is a mystery.

1 Everyone's Birthday & Age

One of the most famously confusing parts of Friends for years now has been the birthdays of the main six characters, as well as their ages in general.

Ross is 29 for three seasons as well as having a birthday in October and December. Joey is said to be the youngest friend at 25 in season one, but Rachel turns 30 last. Speaking of Rachel, she claims to be an Aquarius but also has a birthday in May. Their birth information has either been glossed over or outright ignored over the course of the show, leaving many fans confused as to how old their favorite characters really are.
