In Kim's Convenience, viewers are introduced to the Kim family and their convenience store in Toronto's Moss Park neighborhood. Appa and Umma are the matriarchs of the family as they juggle their business and two kids, Janet and Jung. With Jung on his own, it's up to Janet to help her parents out with their store as she studies photography at university.
As great of a daughter as Janet is, she has definitely had her bad moments with Appa and Umma. As the second child and only daughter, her parents tend to not take her seriously, which drives Janet to live unpredictably. Keep scrolling to see 10 of Janet's best and worst daughter moments.
10 The Best: She Threw Them An Anniversary Party
In "Happy Ummaversary," Janet decides to throw Appa and Umma an anniversary party because they never celebrate it. She tries to keep it a surprise from Umma and has the party at her apartment with both Jung and Appa.
Sadly, the party has a rough start when Jung and Appa go head to head but it ends nicely. All Umma ever wants is to have her family together and Janet finally succeeded at doing that.
9 The Worst: Janet Trusts Someone Else To Teach Her Hapkido
Hapkido is a Korean martial art that requires years of practicing and special technique. In Kim's Convenience, Janet and her roommate Gerald give Hapkido a try but get ridiculed by Mr. Kim for trusting someone else with training.
He's genuinely hurt that they're learning something from his native land without talking to him about it first. To teach them a lesson, Appa heads down to the Hapkido gym to show Janet's teacher who's boss but he ended up being a Hapkido master. Appa was mortified and Janet was judged hard.
8 The Best: She Works For Them So They Can Have A Date Night
If it wasn't for Janet, Appa and Umma would never be able to take off from work. They could have hired a third person to help (like they did with Gerald when Janet started working at Handy) but it's a tight-knit business and they would have to hire someone they trusted.
In "Wingman," Appa and Umma go out for a night on the town with Mr. Chin. With the two of them out for the night, Janet takes over and holds down the convenient store so her adorable parents can enjoy themselves.
7 The Worst: She's Not Very Inviting When Her Cousin Is In Town
In the episode "Frank & Nayoung," tensions run high when Janet's cousin Nayoung comes to visit from Korea. She's an adorable young woman who's excited to see Janet's world but Janet doesn't reciprocate.
Appa and Umma want Janet to keep Nayoung busy but she becomes annoyed by her cuteness and comes off dry. Then again, Appa and Umma do ask a lot of Janet. Perhaps it was too much for Janet to take care of Nayoung on her Canadian travels.
6 The Best: She Got The Whole Family To Sing At Church
The season one finale was an emotional one. The church was hosting a family singing competition and Mrs. Kim really wanted the family to compete and beat the Parks family.
At first, Mrs. Kim wanted to sing with Jung (because he had a nicer voice than Janet) but Janet wanted to butter her parents up so she could move in with Gerald. With Umma, Jung, and Janet signed up to sing, Appa chose not to. Instead, he sang with his family in the hallway, locking tearful eyes with his wife and kids.
5 The Worst: She Portrayed Her Mother As A Witch
In the fourth season, Umma is distraught when she finds old artwork of Janet's. Janet portrayed Appa as a superhero but Umma was portrayed as an evil witch. Umma calls her heartless among other words but Janet quickly calms her mother's fears by telling her it wasn't of her. It was of her babysitter.
Umma felt relieved for a while until she found out Janet was lying. The picture really was of Umma! It made her feel like she was a bad mother and that Janet was ungrateful.
4 The Best: She Had Jung Fix The Dripping Pipe
When Janet's parents were out on the town, a pipe began to drip in the convenience store. Janet promised Appa she wouldn't call a plumber and that she would figure it out herself. What she did instead was call her older brother Jung who came in and saved the day.
So no only did her parents come back to a dry store but she saved them money by secretly having Jung do the dirty work!
3 The Worst: She Lied To Her Appa
In "Beacon of Truth," Appa is shocked when he learns Janet has been lying to him since she was a little girl. Everything from school trips to band practice has been a lie and it made Appa rethink how he saw his little girl.
He tells Umma what he learned about Janet but she's just happy someone else is mad at her for a change because she's always angry at Janet.
2 The Best: She Got Appa A Smartphone And A New Car
Appa and Umma try their best to stay "hip" but they're also very stuck in their ways. They go to work, they go to church, they give back to the community, and they parent their children. Janet gives her parents a hard time some times but she's also a very thoughtful daughter.
She got Appa a Smartphone to keep him up with the times and she even upgraded his van for him. Appa never asks for the gifts Janet gives him but he sure does warm up to them quickly after a few compliments from strangers.
1 The Worst: She Didn't Defend Her Parents When Her Professor Thought Appa & Umma Were Abusive
In "Rude Kid," Janet is upset to learn that she received bad marks on a project by one of her teachers. That same teacher showed up at Kim's Convenience to see more of Janet's life but leaves in a hurry when Mr. Kim flicked her son in the forehead for misbehaving.
Due to Mr. Kim's physical act of violence, Janet's professor gave Janet a better grade because she assumed Janet was emotionally abused by her parents. The problem is that Janet didn't stop her from saying those things. The looks on Umma and Appa's faces when they found out Janet thought they were abusive were heartbreaking.
