Saturday Night Live is returning this week with another "At Home" episode. The NBC variety show was put on indefinite hiatus after production shut down due to the spread of COVID-19. SNL's last live airing was on March 7th, with Daniel Craig hosting and The Weeknd as a musical guest. The show was supposed to return on March 28th with John Krasinski hosting and promoting A Quiet Place Part II (one of many films that have been delayed due to coronavirus).
SNL announced on their official Twitter account that the show will be returning for a second at home episode this Saturday. No host or musical guest was announced, but the previous "At Home" episode featured Tom Hanks as the guest host. You can watch the promo video below.
SNL isn't the only NBC show to continue to produce content in isolation. Late-night shows The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers have also been airing "at home" editions of their shows, with both hosts filming segments in their homes and around their families, as well as interviewing celebrities via Zoom or Skype. These programs are fortunate to be able to produce content still, as most shows aren't so lucky. Production has halted for many TV shows, with some shows cutting their season short and postponing their season finale. Luckily fans can look forward to Saturday Night Live delivering some much-needed comedy during this difficult time.
After being off the air for several weeks, SNL decided to do an "at home" version of the show on April 11th. This meant pre-recording sketches and monologues individually, as well as the occasional interaction through Zoom. The show did not have a traditional host, but there was an opening monologue by Tom Hanks, one of the first celebrities to test positive for the coronavirus. The episode was well-received by many fans, noting the effort put in to deliver a funny show under unusual circumstances.
