Anchored by the impeccable on-screen chemistry shared by its stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, Adam McKay’s Step Brothers stands as one of the greatest comedies of the 21st century. Although it was met with a lukewarm reception from critics upon its initial release, the movie has grown a huge cult audience over the years.
Despite years of sequel rumors, McKay, Ferrell, and Reilly still have yet to deliver a follow-up. At least, in the meantime, the original is endlessly rewatchable. It has countless gags that’ll never get old. So, here are the 10 funniest scenes from Step Brothers.
10 Nancy And Brennan Drive To Their New House
After Nancy marries Robert, she and Brennan move in with Robert and Dale. However, Brennan hasn’t fully come to terms with his new living situation. He sits in the backseat of the car and complains about his new stepdad.
He says, “Robert had better not get in my face...‘cause I’ll drop that motherf***er,” and also refuses to call Robert “Dad,” “...even if there’s a fire!”
9 Planet Bulls***
Following Dale and Brennan’s first big fight, Robert and Nancy take away their TV privileges for a week and tell them to fix the drywall they broke.
The stepbrothers don’t react too well to being told what to do: “This house is a f***ing prison!” “On Planet Bulls***!” “In the galaxy of This Sucks Camel D***s!”
8 Brennan Is Forced To Lick A White Dog Turd
Although Dale wants to take a different route home, Brennan convinces him to walk past the playground where his bully, Chris Gardocki, hangs out. When they get there, Brennan tries to talk to the bullies and gets forced to lick a white dog turd.
This is one of Step Brothers’ most prominent grossout moments, so if it’s a tough one for you to stomach, just remember that the white dog turd prop was actually made from powdered donuts.
7 “Sweet Child O’ Mine”
Brennan’s douchey younger brother Derek is introduced in the best way possible. In the car on the way to have dinner at Robert and Nancy’s house, Derek and his family sing an a cappella rendition of Guns ‘n’ Roses’ “Sweet Child o’ Mine.”
When Derek’s wife Alice has a solo, Derek mercilessly critiques her performance before “saving” the whole thing with his own solo and accidentally swerving into traffic. It establishes the unfair pressure that Derek puts on his family, as well as the sheer misery of his suffocated wife.
6 Dale And Brennan Become Best Friends
After bonding over a mutual hatred of Derek, Dale and Brennan become best friends – the kind of best friends who ride majestic, translucent steeds, shooting flaming arrows across the bridge of Hemdale.
Set to the uplifting sounds of Hall & Oates’ “You Make My Dreams,” Dale and Brennan have swordfight in the bathroom, watch an ultraviolent action movie together, and play with martial arts weapons in the garage.
5 The Catalina Wine Mixer
“It’s the f***in’ Catalina Wine Mixer!” The whole sequence at the fabled Catalina Wine Mixer – which wasn’t actually filmed in Catalina (although Catalina can be seen in the background, off the coast) – makes for a brilliant climax to the movie.
The scene is filled with hysterical character moments, from Dale and Brennan acting like grown-ups for the first time to Robert explaining his childhood ambitions to become a dinosaur.
4 Tuxedo-Clad Job Interviews
When Robert sets up a few job interviews for Dale and Brennan, they couldn’t go about interviewing for the positions in a worse way. For starters, they both wear tuxedos (after Robert gave them the freedom to take whatever they wanted from his closet) and they interview for each job as a pair.
From Brennan’s failure to pronounce the name “Pam” to Dale’s ridiculously long fart during Seth Rogen’s cameo appearance, this montage is filled with hilarious moments.
3 “John Bonham’s Playing ‘Moby Dick’ For Real!”
The only rule that Brennan is forced to follow when he moves in with Robert and Dale is that he can’t go into Dale’s beat laboratory or touch his drums. Of course, the second Dale leaves the house, Brennan starts banging on the drums.
When a chip on one of the sticks makes Dale suspicious, he confronts Brennan, who responds to the accusations by going upstairs and rubbing his balls on Dale’s drums.
2 Homemade Bunk Bed
When Dale and Brennan first become friends, they concoct a plan to turn their beds into a homemade bunk bed, supposedly to free up some room to do activities.
Of course, neither of them is a particularly adept carpenter. So, as soon as Dale jumps onto the top bunk, the bed breaks off and crushes Brennan.
1 Dale And Brennan Screen The “Boats ‘N’ Hoes” Music Video
At Derek’s birthday dinner, Dale and Brennan decide to wow the crowd with a presentation for potential investors for their worldwide entertainment business, Prestige Worldwide.
They screen their first music video, “Boats ‘N’ Hoes,” which they shot on Robert’s boat. Any chance of investments goes out the window when the destruction of the boat overshadows the rise of Prestige Worldwide.
