Survivor: The 10 Strangest Hidden Immunity Idol Locations Of All Time, Ranked

The hidden immunity idol. It's been a mainstay on Survivor since Guatemala (which aired in 2005!), and it's consistently been the source of some terrific tension. In the early days, the hidden immunity idol was typically found through clues. Russell Hantz changed this forever in Samoa by simply running around camp like a madman and finding the idols by himself, clues be damned. This type of aggressive gameplay changed Survivor forever, and "finding the hidden immunity idol" is now one of Survivor's most important gameplay elements.

"Hidden" is the operative word here because these things are not easy to find! These are the 10 strangest hidden immunity idol locations of all time, ranked.

10 Samoa

Russell Hantz is an idol master and his performance throughout Samoa is legendary. Perhaps his greatest find is the river idol, which Russell finds hidden in the underside of a river bridge.

Russell had no clues as to where it was - he simply knew that it must be near a landmark or a point of interest. Sure enough, he finds it under the bridge. No help, no clues, no problem.

9 Blood Vs. Water

Like Russell, Tyson was an idol mastermind throughout his winning season, Blood vs. Water. He found two immunity idols, with the second being a particularly tricky find.

It was located way up in a tree in what looks like a bird's nest, forcing Tyson to scale the tree by himself and fish it out of the nest. The idols were moving from the ground to the trees and it was glorious and exciting to behold.

8 Heroes Vs. Healers Vs. Hustlers

Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers mixed up the idol process by presenting two distinct halves of one idol. At first, Lauren Rimmer finds "the idol" at camp.

However, this turns out to be one half of the hidden immunity idol - the other half is located in the following immunity challenge! It was in a nondescript seashell that was directly in front of her podium.

7 David Vs. Goliath

David vs. Goliath contains a very distinct hidden immunity idol. Angelina Keeley finds a clue and an accompanying ladder. The clue leads her to a massive rock wall at the campsite.

She is forced to use the ladder to climb it, move a suspicious piece of the wall to reveal a hidden hole, and retrieve the idol. It's thrilling stuff, made all the more memorable by Nick and Mike's drunken shenanigans.

6 Kaoh Rong

Finding Kaoh Rong's hidden immunity idol was a process. The idol itself is hidden inside a lockbox buried underground. To unlock the box, Tai needed to find a key (obviously).

Said key was inside some sort of contraption hidden high up in a tree. So, Tai needed to find the clue itself, find the tree hiding the key, use a weird contraption to obtain the key, dig up the lockbox, and obtain the hidden immunity idol!

5 Cambodia

Cambodia mixed things up even more by presenting a hidden immunity idol at a challenge. Kelley Wentworth found a clue hidden in a tree and said clue provided the location of the hidden immunity idol.

The idol was placed underneath a structure in the upcoming immunity challenge. She followed the directions perfectly and snagged the idol when her team wasn't looking. The idol would later come in handy.

4 Millennials Vs. Gen X

Millennials vs. Gen X featured a bizarre twist in the hidden immunity idol challenge. The idols were hidden in various "everyday" items, including logs, shells, and coconuts. Perhaps the best find of the season came from David Wright, who found a coconut emblazoned with his tribe's insignia.

Knowing that this was something important, he cracked open the coconut to discover a hidden immunity idol. Inside a coconut!

3 Game Changers

For Game Changers we return to Tai Trang, who found what is arguably the coolest hidden immunity idol in Survivor history. The idol was actually located at the tribe's water well and it required Tai to "unveil" a hidden diagram of a ship wheel by pouring water over the wood.

By unveiling the hidden diagram, Tai knew to dig underneath where the diagram was located and he found the hidden immunity idol buried under the water well.

2 China

Everyone remembers China's immunity idols for a variety of reasons. One reason was their location. There were actually two idols in this season and they were each placed on the archway of each tribe's camp.

The players were forced to "discreetly" climb the archway and pry off the wooden idols. These idols are well known for not being played, as James was voted out with both idols in his possession.

1 Philippines

Philippines contains what is arguably the greatest hidden immunity idol in Survivor history. It is found by Survivor veteran Jonathan Penner on top of the tribe's rice box! As in, the rice box they open and close every single day in order to obtain the camp's supply of rice.

This was like China's "hidden in plain view" idol on steroids and Penner must be commended for his intelligence and quick wit.
