The Vampire Diaries: 5 Times Elena Was Worse Than Katherine (& 5 Times She Was Better)

Elena Gilbert is often regarded as the moral compass of The Vampire Diaries. Her character is a far cry from her villainous vampire doppelganger, Katherine Pierce. Elena is said to be a compassionate person who wants to help other people, whereas Katherine is notorious for her selfish and ruthless nature.

Despite this, Elena wasn't always squeaky clean. She displayed many hypocritical tendencies, prioritizing her desires over the needs of other people and barely batting an eyelid after committing a mass slaughter of vampires. Elena tried to be a good person but at times, she was considerably worse than Katherine.

10 Worse: Killing Kol's Sireline

Elena Gilbert seems like the more compassionate counterpart to her doppelganger, Katherine. Yet in Season 4 of The Vampire Diaries, Elena kills thousands of vampires when she and Jeremy murder Kol, an Original vampire.

Despite Stefan warning her not to kill Rebekah earlier in the season for the same reason, Elena conspires to kill Kol and eradicate his sireline to complete Jeremy's Hunter's mark. The newly-turned vampire shows no remorse for her actions, caring only about obtaining the cure for immortality.

9 Better: Refusing To Give Up On Stefan

Stefan is forced to accompany Klaus on a murder spree in Season 3 after the Original hybrid cures Damon of a werewolf bite. Although she is urged to give up on her boyfriend, Elena refuses and continues to search for Stefan.

Even when Stefan is compelled by Klaus to turn off his humanity, Elena tries to pull her boyfriend back from the brink of his bloodlust. Elena's dedication to Stefan is stronger than Katherine's as the older vampire abandoned Stefan in 1864 to protect herself.

8 Worse: Taking Advantage Of Bonnie's Powers

Elena claims that Bonnie Bennett is her best friend, but she only seems to contact the witch whenever she needs help. Bonnie's powers are totally exploited throughout the series. Furthermore, her grandmother dies and her mother is turned into a vampire as a result of Elena's choices.

Bonnie drifts apart from Elena in the show's early seasons due to the doppelganger's affiliation with vampires. Instead of prioritizing her friend's feelings, Elena continues to date the Salvatores and runs to Bonnie for help during every supernatural fiasco.

7 Better: Remaining In Her Coma So Bonnie Could Live

Nina Dobrev's real-life departure from the cast meant that Elena was absent from The Vampire Diaries for the final two seasons. In Season 6, Kai places Elena in a magical coma that ensures she won't wake up until Bonnie dies.

Elena and Bonnie later communicate with the use of magic. The doppelganger implores her friend to let her do something selfless and sacrificial. Elena recognizes how much Bonnie has done for her and doesn't hesitate to return the favor.

6 Worse: Making Caroline's Grief About Herself

Elena frequently showcases a habit of making other people's pain about herself. In Season 6, Caroline struggles to cope after the death of her mother and turns her humanity off as a result. Rather than listen to her friend, Elena gives Caroline a tirade about her experiences.

The doppelganger displayed self-centered tendencies as a human. After she transitions to vampirism, Elena's selfishness is magnified and becomes one of her most off-putting attributes.

5 Better: Forcing Katherine To Take The Cure

Elena comes to blows with Katherine in the Season 4 finale. The older vampire attacks her doppelganger in the hallways of the high school and overpowers her until Elena forces the cure down her throat.

Katherine's age gives her a physical advantage over Elena, but the younger vampire thinks on her feet and defeats her opponent by giving her the cure. This a cathartic moment for Elena, who suffered because of Katherine throughout the series.

4 Worse: Refusing To Apologize To Her Friends

Elena murders innocent people and tries to kill both of her best friends in Season 4 after turning off her humanity. The vampire eventually regains her emotions, but refuses to apologize to Caroline and Bonnie because it's "too hard."

Elena's actions without her humanity can be accredited to supernatural sources. However, her refusal to atone for her actions and say sorry to her friends, despite the hurt she inflicted on them, is a result of her character's egocentric behavior.

3 Better: Refusing To Run From Klaus

Klaus arrives in Mystic Falls in Season 2 intending to sacrifice Elena in the moonstone ritual to break his hybrid curse. Elena chooses not to run from the Original and remains in town to keep her friends and family safe.

Elena's decision backfires as Klaus kills her aunt Jenna during the sacrifice. Regardless, she did what she thought was right to protect her loved ones and, unlike Katherine, chose not to run.

2 Worse: Forgiving Damon For Hurting Her Friends

Initially, Elena is wary of Damon and repulsed by his actions. The older Salvatore brother kills countless people in Mystic Falls, abuses Caroline, and is responsible for the death of Matt's sister, Vicki Donovan.

Despite all of the horrible things Damon has done to her loved ones, Elena overlooks his litany of flaws and begins a relationship with him in Season 4. The vampire remarks in Season 5 that Elena is "dating a reformed serial killer," which only makes the doppelganger laugh.

1 Better: Cared About Her Friends

Elena wasn't always a great friend, but she cared about her loved ones deeply. Katherine is envious of Elena's life and the strong bond she shares with Bonnie, Caroline, Matt, and the rest of the Mystic Falls gang. The older vampire attempts to steal her doppelganger's life in Season 5 but is thwarted by Stefan.

Unlike Katherine, Elena cares about the people in her life and tries her best to maintain relationships. Although she can be selfish, her ego falls far short of Katherine's.
