Recess was always full of action and lasted for six seasons as the children involved did everything from detective episodes to protesting to save their beloved Old Rusty. While the vast majority of the characters in this show are children, Disney did a great job creating varying personalities and intelligence to make the characters feel unique.

Within this list, we shall take a look at 10 of the main characters from the hit show, and rank them purely based on the intelligence they display throughout the series.

10 Randall Weems

Randall Weems is the school snitch who relishes in telling the teachers about all the activity that is going on around the school, no matter what. He is desperate to be liked by the teachers and that leads to him not being very well-liked by his peers.

He is certainly cunning and clever in terms of hiding out to try and spy on people, but he also often gets caught because of the basic mistakes that he makes on a consistent basis. Because of that and the fact he isn't showcased too much, he is the least intelligent main character.

9 Miss Finster

Miss Finster is a Third Street School assistant teacher and she rules the playground with an iron fist. Everything that happens is watched over by her and nothing goes unnoticed. She is a very grumpy character and someone who isn't a big fan of fun.

Throughout the show, she's mainly just used as the antagonist and someone to shout at the children, therefore her full intelligence isn't really highlighted. However, the fact that the kids often get one over on her isn't a good sign.

8 Vince LaSalle

Vince LaSalle takes the stereotypical 'sports' character from the show and because of that he isn't often highlighted as the smartest character. Athletically, Vince seems to have the gift of being talented at every sport he tries, but he doesn't often showcase real intelligence like some of his classmates.

While he certainly isn't stupid and does help out with big decisions or helpful comments at times. He doesn't quite get the opportunity to really be as smart as the other characters outside his physical achievements.

7 Mikey Blumberg

Mikey Blumberg really brings the emotional aspect to the Recess gang, which is incredibly important. He is a lot of fun within the group and he has an incredible singing voice, but it is his sensitivity that really makes him a popular character.

However, he is also a very smart character as well. While some characters have great knowledge of science or maths, Mikey's strength comes from English. In particular, it comes with poems and he often comes up with different ones throughout the series on a whim, showing his creative side as well.

6 Gus Griswald

Gus might be the quietest member of the group when the show first starts due to the fact he is new to the school, but he soon finds his feet and proves to be a key member. Gus is a really nice person and is the one member of the group who really wants everyone to be together.

He might not be loud and therefore his opinions can sometimes be ignored, but Gus is actually one of the smartest characters. His love for the army and organization allows him to really assess situations at such a young age, which makes for a fun character.

5 Ashley Spinelli

Ashley Spinelli is perhaps one of the most underrated characters from Recess and is someone who does get judged early on because she is actually the tough member of the group who has no problem in fighting. However, she is also incredibly smart.

Spinelli comes out with some very observant comments and that's where her intelligence comes in as she analyzes everything that is happening. She often comes up with the solution, even though it might not seem like she is going to be the one to do so, with her smartness often going underrated.

4 Principal Peter Prickly

Prickly by name and prickly by nature, Principal Prickly might be a little grumpy at times, but he certainly cares about his school and his students. He very much sees himself in TJ, and that's when a lighter side of his personality creeps out.

Of course, being the principal of the school shows his intelligence as it isn't a job that anyone can walk into, and he seems to do a fine job of running things. However, he isn't shown quite as much as other characters and he is often the butt of a joke, making a few silly mistakes which is why he doesn't rank higher.

3 Miss Alordayne Grotke

Miss Alordayne Grtoke is one of the only teachers that is regularly featured, and that is because she teaches the class of the main characters. She is very popular, unlike the other members of staff in this list as she is actually nice to the students and really seems to care.

She is very much a hippie by nature and her personality reflects that with her free spirit attitude. However, she is certainly intelligent, after all, she is a teacher. But it is also in the way she deals with the kids and their problems that she showcases a great understanding of young personalities.

2 'TJ'

TJ is technically the main character throughout Recess, mainly because he is the leader of the group who often comes up with all the plans for him and his friends. While his ideas sometimes lead to trouble, his infectious personality and curios nature often help get them out of any pickle.

TJ might not be book smart like other characters are, but he is certainly an intelligent character. He uses his brains for fun and creating ideas. He is a problem solver and someone who thinks on his feet, using his intelligence physically, which is just as important.

1 Gretchen Grundler

The smartest character from Recess is certainly Gretchen Grundler, who is one of the lead roles and is part of the core group. She follows the stereotypical 'nerd' role for the school-based show, but she is incredibly smart and the show empowers that about her, which is great.

She can often be found pulling out random facts, coming up with equations to work out whether something is possible or creating fun experiments. To say she's only young, Gretchen is certainly very intelligent and that is her number one trait.
