Director Zack Snyder revealed a Doomsday Easter egg in Man of Steel that foreshadows the monster's rampage in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Zack Snyder may be a controversial figure, but one thing's for certain: his cinematographic style is absolutely beautiful, and he puts a tremendous amount of attention into the visuals. That means it really does pay to look closely and rewatch his films.
Snyder has been organizing watch-parties to help fans get through the coronavirus pandemic and its associated lockdowns. The latest watch-party, hosted by Snyder on his Vero app, saw fans settle down to watch Man of Steel. Snyder streamed a detailed commentary, even giving a glimpse of his "Bible" from the film and showing the depth of thought that went into the production.
The early scenes of Man of Steel are set on Krypton, and Snyder pointed to one detail in the background: the broken moon of Krypton. In Snyder's mind, the moon had been destroyed by Doomsday in ages past, an idea that doesn't really have any comic book precedent but works within the world Snyder has created. This was intended to foreshadow the existence of Superman's most dangerous enemy. At the time, Snyder had no idea whether or not he'd ever get to make a sequel; he certainly wasn't envisioning the birth of the DC Extended Universe. But he certainly planned this setup and built upon it in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Last year, Snyder confirmed the original Doomsday still exists in the DCEU, presumably a result of experiments conducted on ancient Krypton. The one seen in Batman v Superman was a mutated monster created by Lex Luthor using the Codex. It's interesting to speculate whether or not this being was operating at the same power level as the original Doomsday, the one created on Krypton. It's entirely possible the Kryptonians created a Doomsday who was far more powerful, and could yet return as a potent threat.
Interestingly, Snyder's comment fits perfectly with the TV series Krypton, which was penned by Man of Steel's writer David S. Goyer. In the episode "Blood Moon," Wegthor - one of Krypton's two moons - was shattered; Doomsday was believed to be killed. It's generally believed Krypton was originally intended to be seen as a DCEU prequel, although plans changed during pre-production. Snyder's Doomsday Easter egg makes the parallels all the more striking, emphasizing the close relationship between the film and the TV series.
