As buzz builds around Henry Cavill's return to the DC Extended Universe as Superman, it appears the actor/character won't pop up in one of the DCEU's upcoming high-profile releases. It has been several years since Cavill dawned Clark Kent's cape, with his most recent appearance as the superhero coming in Justice League in 2017. While Cavill will be featured in the Snyder Cut of the Justice League - set for a release on HBO Max in 2021 - his grand re-entry to the DCEU remains shrouded in mystery.
Lately, rumors have spread that Cavill is interested in returning to the role soon. He is reportedly in discussions to revive the character, though it won't come in the form of a sequel to Man of Steel, the movie that introduced audiences to his version of Superman in 2013. It does seem possible he may make a brief cameo in either Aquaman 2 or Shazam 2, but neither of those appearances are confirmed at this time.
That being said, it seems he won't be appearing in some of the biggest blockbusters the DCEU will have to offer in the next couple of years. In Friday's Heat Vision Newsletter from THR, it was stated that Cavill wasn't in the process of negotiating any upcoming cameos. Additionally, the character isn't "currently" included in any script for Black Adam, The Batman or The Flash, all set for release in the coming years. The keyword is highlighted there, as a script edit could easily be made if negotiations progress for Cavill's inclusion.
It isn't shocking Superman wouldn't be included in The Batman - the film is an opportunity to introduce a new portrayer of Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), and besides, the Batman with Superman angle became played out with 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Including him in the introduction of Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam would've been entertaining, with plenty of fan art at the ready for the possibility. But including him in The Flash would've made the most sense, especially considering the alternate Earth angle the film might explore.
Cavill almost made a cameo in Shazam before it was scrapped - although the character of Superman did make an appearance. With Shazam 2 likely to be the first DCEU release following the three films mentioned in Heat Vision, it seems to be the most likely entry point to bring Cavill's Superman back into the fold. Despite this report, however, many fans will keep mocking up the possibility of Cavill making an earlier appearance in a DCEU film.
