How To Get Away With Murder: Ranking The Main Characters By Intelligence

The television show How to Get Away with Murder is filled with brilliant characters. This makes sense as most of the characters are law students, lawyers, or law enforcement officials. These characters regularly maneuver their way out of difficult situations by crafting elaborate plans.

While there are certain characters who fans will immediately identify as intelligent due to their book smarts, there are other forms of intelligence on this show that should not be overlooked. Intelligence is more than the ability to remember facts or use large vocabulary. Cunningness, social intelligence, and mastery of a skill set are all different forms of intelligence. With that in mind, let's take a look at the main characters of How to Get Away with Murder sorted by their intelligence.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains information from the series finale of How to Get Away with Murder.

10 Asher

Without a doubt, Asher is the least intelligent of the main characters. Though he got into Middleton and is able to provide legal insight in cases, he doesn't have much else going for him. He lacks emotional intelligence and is highly emotional.

Asher often makes rash decisions, throwing logic out the window and that is why he is at the bottom of this list.

9 Wes

Wes worked hard to get into law school. Though Wes is a good student, he lacks the ability to apply these critical thinking skills to real-life situations. He often overlooks information that is right in front of him and his recklessness gets him into many dangerous situations.

Wes will aggressively confront a dangerous advisory face-to-face without stopping to consider the consequences. The stupidity of this outweighs all of his intelligence.

8 Bonnie

If Bonnie wasn't so easily manipulated, she would have earned herself a higher spot on this list. Bonnie is clever and has proved to be cunning in many situations. Annalise entrusted Bonnie to mentor her interns. Bonnie often does a lot of the prep work required to go to trial and spends a lot of time covering up the messes of others.

Unfortunately, Bonnie also jumps to conclusions which leads her to make some serious mistakes, such as killing Rebecca and Miller. Her emotions overpower her critical thinking skills, which she demonstrated by telling Frank about his parents and jumping in the line of fire to attempt to stop Frank, resulting in her death.

7 Oliver

Oliver fills the typical "nerd" stereotype for the show. He is a computer technician and proves to be talented at hacking. These skills come in handy as he regularly helps Annalise and the Keating 5 obtain helpful information for their cases and destroy damning evidence.

Oliver also possesses emotional intelligence. His ability to identify and express his own emotions while noticing changes in the behavior of others, recognizing their feelings as well, makes Oliver a great friend and partner.

6 Connor

Connor has great instincts and is able to get others to trust him by drawing conclusions about their motivations very quickly. Connor is also extremely witty and is known for his clever one-liners and dry humor. He is able to eloquently express himself and isn't easily manipulated by others.

5 Frank

Frank's intelligence is regularly overlooked. Frank is an extremely quick learner. After spending time around Annalise's law students, he begins to learn the basics of law and is able to help run the firm. He even decides to pursue becoming a lawyer in season 4 and receives a high score on the LSAT examination required to gain entry into law school. This proves that Frank can apply himself academically, but his worldly intelligence and instincts far exceed his academic ability.

Frank is incredibly cunning. He is able to seamlessly craft and execute plans such as helping to frame Nate for Sam's murder. When Hannah Keating is murdered, Annalise and Tegan believe all hope is lost. Instead of giving up or panicking, Frank creates a plan and is able to obtain information from Hannah's attorney. Frank is also intuitive and is able to use his powers of observation to manipulate those around him. All of these skills combined make Frank an all-around intelligent character.

4 Laurel

Laurel's strongest asset is her strong instincts. She is able to use this intuition to get herself out of difficult situations and protect herself, such as when she disappeared with Christopher. She was able to pull this off without leaving evidence that would allow the others to find her.

Laurel is fluent in 3 different languages, English, Spanish, and French. She can eloquently express herself in all of these languages and seemingly switches back and forth between all 3 languages. Laurel is also very detail-oriented, often noticing things her peers have overlooked. Though she may seem reserved and subdued, Laurel's wheels are constantly turning.

3 Michaela

Michaela isn't shy about sharing her intelligence. She is an excellent student who devotes herself to being the best. Michaela knows what it takes to be successful and appropriately prioritizes tasks, focusing her energy on the best path to success.

Michaela is able to quickly adapt, fitting into any situation. She regularly determines which aspects of herself would be most accepted in any given moment and does what she needs to do to impress those whose opinion she values. Michaela prioritizes her success and ambition. She is very persuasive and ensures that those around her recognize her worth.

2 Tegan

Upon her introduction in season 4, Tegan immediately stole the spotlight and solidified herself as a formidable character. She is a hugely successful lawyer and the only female managing partner at Caplan & Gold. It is revealed that Tegan passed the bar at the age of 22, which is an incredible feat.

Tegan is an excellent judge of character and can easily determine when someone isn't being honest with her. She has great emotional intelligence and is able to compartmentalize her emotions while still acknowledging and appropriately expressing her feelings. This confident woman regularly contrives new legal strategies and proves to everyone that she is a person one doesn't want to cross.

1 Annalise

Annalise has a famous reputation for a reason. She is a profoundly masterful lawyer and professor, evidenced through the number of difficult trials she wins and the success of her students. Annalise is able to control the perception others have of her and manipulate them for her own gain.

She crafts powerful and moving statements that earn her the respect of many. Annalise is so intelligent that she is feared by Governor Birkhead, who is determined to take Annalise down as she views her as a threat to her power. Anyone attempting to face off with Annalise is sure to be outsmarted.
