Mandalorian Season 2 Casts Timothy Olyphant in Mystery Role

The Mandalorian has snagged another big name for the cast of the upcoming second season, casting Timothy Olyphant in an unknown role. Filming for season 2 of the Disney+ Star Wars show finished just before the coronavirus pandemic spiked, meaning Olyphant's casting and role weren't leaked while he was on set and his scenes have already been shot. There will be plenty of speculation surrounding the role Olyphant is playing, as the new season isn't expected to be released until the fall.

There have already been several significant casting developments for season 2 of The Mandalorian. Arguably the most significant development has been the casting of Rosario Dawson in the role of Ahsoka Tano; that news generated a lot of pushback, as Ashley Eckstein has been voicing the character on Star Wars: The Clone Wars for the past decade. In other exciting news, Temuera Morrison will be bringing Boba Fett back to the Star Wars universe, seemingly erasing the character's canonized death from Return of the Jedi.

Now, Olyphant will be joining the fold as well. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Olyphant will be joining season 2 of The Mandalorian in a mysterious role - it's not immediately clear if the character he plays is new or not to the wider Star Wars universe. Most of the casting news related to season 2 involves pre-existing characters, though, so the lack of a confirmed identity tied to Olyphant may suggest the character will be a new one.

From an acting perspective, Olyphant should be a good fit for The Mandalorian. His most well-known role acting role was playing U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens on Justified, a show that shares some tonal similarities to the Disney+ prestige program. He also played Sheriff Seth Bullock in Deadwood and the recent television movie follow-up to the series. Olyphant has been in several high-profile series in 2020 already, including The Good PlaceCurb Your Enthusiasm, and Fargo.

Because filming for the new season has already been complete, there are no plans to delay the release of it due to the global pandemic, which has sidelined many other shows and movies. There are still around five months to go until its release, however, meaning there should be a steady drip of casting news leaking out from post-production. With Dawson, Morrison, and now Olyphant in the fold, excitement for the second season of The Mandalorian is only going to grow from here.
