Revenge of the Sith Beats Avengers: Endgame In Movie Popularity Poll

In a poll ranking the popularity of summer movies, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith has triumphed over Avengers: Endgame. The superhero team-up film was the culmination of the Infinity Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and shattered box office records around the world, grossing $2.79 billion and passing Avatar as the biggest box office smash of all time.

Revenge of the Sith, which was the final film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and released 15 years ago this week, was a success in its own right, making $868 million, despite being met with a lukewarm reception from critics. The prequel trilogy has since gathered a large fan base, particularly in online communities like Reddit, who claim that the films are the best in the Skywalker saga.

However, over on Rotten Tomatoes, Revenge of the Sith has triumphed over Endgame in the fourth round of their Ultimate Summer Movie Showdown poll, in spite of what the box office numbers say. The poll allows fans to vote on their favourite summer movies in head-to-head battles, and when it came to choosing between the MCU or Star Wars, the classic sci-fi fantasy series won out.

Rotten Tomatoes reports that over 550,000 fans voted in the Revenge of the Sith vs Endgame poll, with almost 81 percent of those votes going to the Star Wars film. The Star Wars series as a whole dominates the poll, with all three movies from the original trilogy making it through to the fourth round, along with Revenge of the Sith. No MCU movies made it through the third round of voting. The other head-to-head battles attracted far fewer votes, with Avengers: Infinity War vs The Dark Knight Rises garnering 400,000 votes (The Dark Knight Rises won out there), Star Wars vs The Dark Knight attracting 217,000 votes (Star Wars triumphed), and all other head-to-head battles getting no more than 175,000 votes.

Revenge of the Sith's victory should be taken in context, however. The subreddit Prequelmemes, which posts memes celebrating the prequel trilogy, has over 1.4 million members, who are all very active online. The subreddit has mobilized those members to vote in an effort to push the poll in favor of Star Wars films. Judging by results, their efforts have succeeded, leading to the upset. And it doesn't seem set to end, with a number of new posts on the subreddit encouraging members to vote in round 4, where Revenge of the Sith is up against Raiders of the Lost Ark, the first installment of the Indiana Jones Franchise. By midday on Tuesday, that poll had already racked up over 600,000 votes, with Raiders of the Lost Ark taking a slight lead at 55 percent.

It is a pity that the prequel fans have skewed the results of the poll, as it would have been interesting to see a true reflection of the popularity of various summer movies. Would Avengers: Endgame have had a better chance against Raiders of the Lost Ark, and could it have won all the way through to triumph as the most popular summer movie ever? We'll never know, thanks to the dedicated online Star Wars fan base.
