Spider-Verse's Spider-Man Movie References Required Many Conversations

Certain shots in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse paying homage to previous movies required many, many conversations. It's no secret that, ever since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man first swung into theaters in 2002, there have been a lot of Spider-Man movies. As one of the most popular superheroes of all time, Spider-Man has spent a lot of time in the spotlight, and if Sony and Marvel's future plans are any indication, he won't be going away any time soon. Luckily, the property got some new life with the arrival of 2018's Into the Spider-Verse, which used vibrant and original animation to tell the story of different Spider-People from various realities. The film grossed over $375.2 million worldwide and won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

While Into the Spider-Verse primarily focused on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), he was surrounded by other well-known characters like Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacey (Hailee Steinfeld). The concept of other universes allowed the film to feature different versions of various characters, as well as suggest the concept that other Spider-Man films happened, just perhaps in an alternate reality. In fact, there was a nearly a scene featuring Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland - the three actors who have played Spider-Man in a live-action movie. While that scene never came to pass, there were still plenty of references to other films.

During a live watch party of Into the Spider-Verse, co-director Rodney Rothman spoke a bit about some of the references included in the film. Fans got a kick out of spotting shots in Into the Spider-Verse that echoed ones from Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, as well as the MCU's Spider-Man: HomecomingAccording to Rothman, however, it was quite a feat getting them all in because "THERE WERE SO MANY CONVERSATIONS TO GET THESE INTO THE MOVIE, SO MANY CONVERSATIONS."

It's a relief that they did make it into Into the Spider-Verse, because they provided some excellent Easter eggs for fans. Even more sly references are expected in Into the Spider-Verse 2, which was recently delayed from April 2022 to October of that same year. It also isn't the only animated Spider-Man film fans can expect, as Sony has an all-female Spider-Verse spin-off in the works.

Plot details surrounding Into the Spider-Verse 2 are being kept tightly under wraps, but it will likely include more characters straight from the pages of comic books and even more incredible visuals. By the time it arrives, another live-action Spider-Man will have been released (the MCU's Spider-Man 3), so viewers might have to keep their eyes peeled for any fun references. It seems inevitable that there will be more.
