When it first hit the airwaves, American Dad! was unfavorably compared to Seth MacFarlane’s other show, Family Guy, and audiences considered it to be the flagship show’s weird, politically-minded cousin. However, after MacFarlane left the show in the more-than-capable hands of his co-creators Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, the series evolved into a beast of its own.
With Stan’s sociopathic behavior and the limitless possibilities of Roger’s disguises taking over from the soft political satire, American Dad! has grown into one of the funniest shows on the air, with countless classic episodes. So, here are the best scenes from IMDb’s 10 top-rated American Dad! episodes.
10 Persona Assistant (8.1) – Rogu Spanish
Roger recruits Stan to fill in as all of his personas in the episode “Persona Assistant,” because a giant growth in his head forces him to take a leave of absence from his hectic life and multiple personalities.
When the growth is removed, it grows arms and legs and Roger names it “Rogu.” At the end of the episode, Rogu makes his own little Ricky Spanish outfit and goes by “Rogu Spanish.”
9 Great Space Roaster (8.1) – Roger Roasts The Smiths
A character asking to be roasted and then having their feelings hurt by the roast is a storyline that countless sitcoms have done. Even Seth MacFarlane has done this storyline twice, once in American Dad! and once in Family Guy.
But American Dad! did it a little differently. Since Roger was the one getting roasted, he took his retaliation way too far and drove the Smiths into space. He then followed them to the space station in a parody of Alien and roasted the family back.
8 In Country...Club (8.1) – Vietnam War Re-Enactment
When Steve is tasked with singing the national anthem to a group of war veterans, Stan is unhappy with his rehearsals. So, he takes him to a Vietnam War re-enactment to give him some perspective.
With Creedence playing on the soundtrack and Steve being traumatized by bursts of fake blood, “In Country...Club” is a terrific parody of Vietnam War films.
7 The Vacation Goo (8.2) – The Smiths Eat Becky
When the family gets along a little too well on their cruise vacation (their first real vacation in years since Stan used to just put them in vats of goo for a simulation), Francine believes she’s still in the goo and jumps overboard.
Stan, Hayley, Steve, and Steve’s new girlfriend Becky follow, and the group washes up on an island where they’re hunted for sport. While they’re hiding out in a cave, Becky gets crushed to death and the Smiths promptly decide to eat her corpse — enjoying their first family meal in a long time.
6 Lost In Space (8.4) – The “Majestic” Sequence
In “Lost in Space,” Jeff is imprisoned on an alien mothership and forced to make fast food for his extraterrestrial overlords. If he can prove he’s in love, he’ll be freed.
So, the Majestic probes his brain and plays a montage of his memories with Hayley. What makes the scene particularly memorable is that it’s set to Wax Fang’s “Majestic.”
5 Tearjerker (8.5) – Oscar Gold Trailer
In the 007 parody episode “Tearjerker,” Roger takes on the role of the titular megalomaniacal villain. After being laughed out of an audition for Monster’s Ball, he set out to make an independent drama that would make audiences around the world cry themselves to death.
The movie, ironically titled Oscar Gold, stars Tearjerker in a satirical checklist of cinematic "Oscar bait" tropes.
4 The Two Hundred (8.6) – Roger’s Personas Swarm The Post-Apocalyptic Wasteland
In the special episode “The Two Hundred,” everyone fears the titular entity in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. However, it turns out to have been made up by Roger.
But then, there’s a second twist as it turns out to be the onslaught of Roger’s personas. At the episode’s climax, every single one of Roger’s personas from the show’s history swarms the wasteland and descends upon the reunited Smith clan.
3 For Whom The Sleigh Bell Tolls (8.6) – The Climactic Battle Sequence
Whereas The Simpsons is known for its Halloween episodes, American Dad! is known for its ultraviolent Christmas episodes. In “For Whom the Sleigh Bell Tolls,” Steve accidentally kills a mall Santa who turns out to be the real deal.
Father Christmas descends upon the Smith family with his armies of elves, reindeer, and a giant snowman who looks like the cave trolls from The Lord of the Rings for an epic battle sequence.
2 Rabbit Ears (8.7) – Stan Enters The TV
The most recent episode on the list, “Rabbit Ears” revolves around Stan finding an old-timey TV at the side of the road and setting it up in the basement. It only plays one TV show, a black-and-white variety series in which jazz musicians play music and waitresses serve drinks in a fancy apartment.
At one point, Stan actually enters the TV and finds himself trapped inside this show, unable to leave. It’s genuinely creepy, but since it’s Stan Smith, it’s also really, really funny.
1 Rapture’s Delight (8.9) – Stan Versus The Anti-Christ
When Stan and Francine are left behind while Steve and Hayley are lifted up to heaven in “Rapture’s Delight,” Stan becomes a scavenger in the ensuing post-apocalyptic wasteland while Francine becomes Jesus’ earthbound girlfriend.
At the climax of the episode, Stan sacrifices himself to save Francine from the Anti-Christ – played hilariously as a parody of the Riddler from the ‘60s Batman TV series by guest star Andy Samberg — and finally earns himself a spot in heaven.
