New fan art by John Black recreates the Black Panther poster in classic Marvel style. Though a relatively new superhero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, T'Challa/Black Panther is already a fan favorite. After his introduction in Captain America: Civil War, actor Chadwick Boseman went on to star in the Black Panther solo film. It was the most critically beloved film of the MCU so far, even netting a nomination for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Black Panther is the only superhero or comic book film to have ever earned that honor. Part of Black Panther's success came from introducing several dynamic characters in T'Challa's circle, including his sister, Shuri; head of the Dora Milaje, Okoye; and the film's complicated villain, Killmonger.
It makes sense Marvel already has Black Panther 2 on the way, with the film scheduled to release in 2022. As it's looking at a 2021 filming start date, much of the movie's story remains a mystery. This includes the villain, with many fans hoping for Namor the Sub-Mariner or Doctor Doom. One more surprising option is M'Baku, who's decidedly a hero in Black Panther. However, M'Baku actor Winston Duke has said he'd like to see his character take a villainous turn. Hopefully, once filming starts fans will have a better idea of Black Panther 2's plot.
Black shared his recreation of the Black Panther movie poster on Instagram. In it, all of the characters can be seen in classic Marvel comics style. The artist also included a side-by-side comparison of his poster and the original, and it's interesting to examine the two up close. Some of the characters' costumes are relatively similar, like Okoye and T'Challa's mother, Ramonda. However, others like M'Baku and Killmonger look quite different. Check out Black's work below:
Recreating Marvel posters in this way is Black's signature concept. In the past, he's done Captain America, Black Widow, Avengers: Endgame, and many others. Though MCU posters frequently contain references to the comics, it's never to the extent seen here. It's a great way to honor the comics origin of Black Panther's story, while still respecting the movie poster as it is. The quote by Stan Lee included in the caption completes the work and is appropriate for this particular moment.
Fan art and poster recreations have become a huge part of the MCU. It's always exciting to see the spin artists and fans put on their favorite Marvel characters. Though Black has already redone several posters in the classic Marvel style, hopefully, fans will see another one when the Black Panther sequel heads to theaters in a couple of years.
