Of all the films produced by the Farrelly Brothers, Dumb and Dumber is by far their finest work. Despite its title, the film is actually a pretty smart comedy in its execution, hosting big laughs in just about every scene. Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels function as live-action cartoon characters, and their ridiculous over the top antics elevate the already impressive writing to a new level.
The film's display of the dumb Lloyd and dumber Harry and their friendship is oddly heartwarming on their epic odyssey to return a briefcase to Mary Swanson in Aspen, Colorado. Though this is a Herculean task, here are 10 of the smartest decisions the dumb duo made in the film. There is definitely a lot of wiggle room and a sharp mercy curve.
10 Taking The Cop's Advice
While on the road, Lloyd has to relieve himself, and in desperation, he pees into several empty beer bottles in the car. Why didn't Harry just pull over and let him go on the side of the row? Note the film's title. While Harry holds the bottles to pass to Harry, a cop passes by and notices the suspicious situation of holding open liquor containers while driving, and pulls them over.
Just to be sure it's liquor, the officer takes a swig from one of the urine-filled bottles to the protest of Harry and Lloyd. In the following mental crack of tasting it, he tells the duo to get out of his sight, to which they quickly comply. Good move.
9 Remembering Details About Mary Swanson
Despite only knowing her for a few minutes, Lloyd managed to learn and retain the knowledge of several details about the woman he was chauffering/falling in love with, Mary Swanson.
He memorized her name, a few details, her luggage's appearance, and where she lived. It might seem insignificant, but the fact that Lloyd remembered all of this correctly is what allowed the journey to take place at all.
8 Harry Getting Angry At Lloyd Over The Mittens
While freezing outdoors in the cold winter of Aspen, Harry and Lloyd ruminate on their situation over a small fire. Harry notes how frozen his hands are, and Lloyd gives him a spare pair of mittens he was wearing, to the utter disdain of a freezing Harry. The ire is justified, but it also leads to the opening of Mary's briefcase, revealing the massive load of cash inside.
7 Peeing On The Motorcycle
This might sound like a pretty dumb idea, and to an extent, it is, but under some analysis, maybe it was for the better. While motorcycling together into the snowy Aspen, this time around, it's Harry who's gotta pee. And while the two men are exposed to the harsh weather, they are frozen together. Harry asks if they can stop somewhere to relieve himself, but Lloyd insists that he pees there and then, on his own back, which Harry does. Lloyd oddly enjoys it and notes the warmth.
Again, it sounds dumb, but if anything, Harry probably stopped his manhood from getting stuck to Lloyd's back like the rest of his body was, which would have been a painful body part to separate, like a tongue on an icy surface, but much worse.
6 Deciding To Leave To Aspen
Early on in the film, upon taking Mary's briefcase, the criminals she was in trouble with track down Lloyd with the stolen briefcase back to his apartment. The thugs leave a message at the door for the duo, by killing Harry's pet parakeet, Petey.
Following, that, Lloyd gives an impassioned speech about wanting to live freely and escape their dull life, which actually is a pretty uplifting speech, considering the realization that they're losers. It's a genuinely sweet moment in an otherwise absurd movie, and the desire to be better and achieve something in life is admirable.
5 Harry Scoring A Date With Mary
When the pair make it to Aspen, Harry accidentally hits it off with Mary while at a charity event and manages to snag a date with her, which was Lloyd's entire motivation to go to Aspen. Once he realizes that he's possibly going to get somewhere with a woman way out of his league, Harry decides to lie to Lloyd about it, so as to not lose his date.
He cruelly sets up Harry to go to a ski resort restaurant and wait for her, convincing Lloyd he got him a date with her. Lloyd ends up falling for it, not realizing the deception until hours later.
4 Pranking Harry With Laxative
In order to exact his vengeance on Harry for snatching away his crush, Lloyd decides to get even in the most sinister of ways. He plays dumb (pun unintended) in front of Harry, acting ignorant of the previous date with Mary, and the impending one.
He then proceeds to dose a glass full of a liquid laxative and makes a toast with Harry. It's almost Shakespearian. Of course, Harry suffers Lloyd's revenge, or perhaps more aptly, Montezuma's revenge, at full violent force.
3 Wearing A Bulletproof Vest
At some point in the third act of the film, Harry cut a deal with an undercover FBI agent (who Lloyd had blown off earlier while waiting for Mary). In the climactic scene in the hotel room, Harry gets shot by the baddie, but he manages to survive because he followed the instructions of the agent.
Of course, he manages to screw up the next step, but at least he survived what could have been a deadly encounter. That is unless he was shot in the face, which Lloyd brings up. But who's the real idiot? The person with the kevlar, or the villain who didn't go for the head?
2 Selling Petey
Lloyd might be the (slightly) smarter member of the duo, but he's certainly not the nicer one. After the goons cut off Petey the parakeet's head, Lloyd turns the tragedy into a cheap profit. He sells the bird (with its decapitated head taped back onto its body) to a blind kid in his neighborhood. It's unbelievably horrible, but he did make a cool $25.
1 Tricking Sea Bass
The Sea Bass scam is the primary reason Lloyd gets the title of "dumb" as opposed to "dumber" in this list. Lloyd doesn't think of the con himself, but he does manage to perfectly pull it off after seeing it in a movie. And rather than use his trickery on a disabled and innocent kid, he uses it on a horrible, hot-tempered, and nasty trucker named Sea Bass.
After Harry accidentally angers Sea Bass at a diner by hitting him with a salt shaker, the enraged Sea Bass spits a loogie into Harry's undeserving hamburger. Ever the glutton for vendetta, Lloyd avenges his friend's meal by tricking a waitress into getting Sea Bass to pay their tab (and then some) and successfully escapes on the highway. It's actually pretty brilliant, despite the high risk of an ass-whooping, legal trouble, or even death...though Lloyd narrowly escapes Sea Bass' own revenge later on in the film.
