Friends: 5 Times Ross Was An Overrated Character (& 5 When He Was Underrated)

Ross Geller was not often the butt of a lot of jokes on Friends, but he brought his fair share of iconic moments on the show. From getting angry over his favorite sandwich at work to getting a very strong spray tan just on his front, Ross has provided fans with a lot of unforgettable memories.

Fans will each have their own favorite quotes from Ross Geller that they love to reminisce about. Let's have a look back at five times Ross was not given nearly enough credit and five times when he was given a bit too much.

10 Overrated: The Routine

In season 6 episode 10, 'The One With The Routine,' Joey's new dancer girlfriend Janine invited Ross and Monica to Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve, where they break out in their old dancing routine from high school. The routine certainly did them no favors back then, and still doesn't.

The show played 'the routine' as the focal point for them in the episode, but it ended up falling a tad flat and is probably lower down in the list of Ross's iconic moments.

9 Underrated: When He Told Rachel To Go To Paris

Ross and Rachel. Rachel and Ross. In season 10 episode 15, 'The One Where Estelle Dies,' Ross tries numerous ways to get Rachel's job back so she doesn't leave to go to Paris, but in the end, he sees how much she wants to go and persuades her to do so, despite all his efforts.

Ross telling the love of his life to jet off to the other side of the world is probably the hardest thing that his character has ever done, but is only given a two-minute scene at the end of the episode.

8 Overrated: When He Got A Monkey

Marcel was one of the best additions to the show early on in season one episode 10, 'The One With The Monkey.' Marcel had many iconic moments, from slamming the door in Ross's apartment and playing 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight' to getting a part in a movie.

The monkey is really what made Ross interesting during this time of the show and many comedic moments were down to Marcel himself. Perhaps that's why they got him to leave the show?

7 Underrated: When He Went To Help At The Ski Lodge

In season 3 episode 17, 'The One Without The Ski Trip,' Rachel invites everyone apart from Ross to her family's ski lodge but they end up breaking down on the way. Ross comes to their rescue to fill up the tank, even though Rachel only created the trip because the other friends blew her off for Ross first.

Ross not only went to fill up the car, but once he and Rachel set aside their differences, he tells the gang to go on the trip without him even though he had the opportunity to join them. He did not want any further conflict with Rachel that might upset the group.

6 Overrated: Ross' Leather Pants

In season 5 episode 11, 'The One With All The Resolutions,' Ross tries something new. He gets a pair of leather pants and wears them on a date. During the date, the pants get stuck around his ankles after his legs get too warm.

Ross tries many methods to cool his legs down, such as lotion and powder, but it does not go to plan. Although a good attempt, the scene is less funny to watch than the producers were hoping.

5 Underrated: Ross' Story About Emma And The Eagle

In season 9 episode 5, 'The One With Phoebe's Birthday Dinner,' Ross and Rachel are locked out of Ross's apartment where Emma is sleeping. Rachel panics and convinces herself that he has either left the window open, left the stove on, or left the water running.

Ross replies with a fantastical story about how an eagle has flown in the window and entangled in a fight with Emma while the apartment fills with water. Even in the episode, this hilarious and underrated story wasn't even given a large laugh track.

4 Overrated: Giving The Finger Without Giving It

One of Ross' gags in the show that fans will remember is when he bangs his fists together to give Monica the finger without "actually having to give it." Rachel then adopted it later in the episode, before Ross revealed a new insult by banging his elbows together.

This was another good attempt at a joke but this moment fell to the back of fans' memories of Ross.

3 Underrated: Ross Vs Doctor Green Vs Mona

In season 8 episode 8, 'The One With The Stripper,' Ross, Mona, and Rachel's father are all in Ross' apartment while Dr. Green shouts at him for getting Rachel pregnant and not marrying her. Meanwhile, Mona is finding this all out for the first time, making this one of his worst dates.

Ross tries to navigate both sides of the argument between Mona and Dr. Green, leading to one of Ross's most underrated moments of the show.

2 Overrated: "We Were On A Break!"

One of the most repeated arguments throughout the show, between Ross and Rachel, was whether or not they were on a break in season 3 when Ross slept with the girl from the copy place.

The "break" is referenced around 15 times throughout the show's 10 seasons and each time it comes up, it never adds anything to the mystery. It is slightly over-used and has not a lot of impact on the episode or season arc.

1 Underrated: When Phoebe Mugged Him

In season 9 episode 15, 'The One With The Mugging,' Phoebe admits that she mugged Ross when they were younger and stole his backpack and by extension his comic book, 'Science-Boy.'

Ross immediately forgave Phoebe when she returned his comic book, which was a very nice gesture. Is your friend mugging you when you were younger something you can get over that quickly? And even if it is, it caused a lot of trauma for Ross when he was mugged in the episode by Phoebe's friend. Forgiving Phoebe for mugging him is a powerful trait that should not be overlooked.
