Full House: 10 Reasons Why Danny and Jesse Aren’t Real Friends

The basis of Full House is about having relationships with people who will stand by you every time. It remains one of the few shows to have friendships that rival other popular shows like Friends, although the sentiment around the series does mask some flaws.

One of these would be the relationship between Danny Tanner and Jesse Katsopolis, who are related due to the former’s marriage to Jesse’s sister. While they always stood by each other throughout the series’ run, Danny and Jesse didn’t actually have that great of a friendship all things considered. In order to dive further into this idea, here are 10 reasons why they might not have been friends all along.

10 They Hardly Spend Time Together Without The Family Around

One thing that is strikingly noticeable is how Danny and Jesse don’t seem to ever hang out. They do interact constantly due to sharing the same house, but there are very few stories where it’s just the two of them being buddies around each other.

The times they do have friendly interactions almost exclusively feature the rest of the family being around as well. While Jesse and Danny never have any awkward moments, they most certainly aren’t each other’s first preference to spend time together.

9 Jesse Didn't Pick Danny As His Best Man

Jesse had only been good friends with Joey for a few years when he got married to Rebecca, while he’d known Danny for well over a decade. However, when the time came to choose the best man, Jesse didn’t hesitate to pick Joey over Danny.

Danny spent the remainder of the episode feeling bad about being overlooked, and it was only after he gave Jesse a pretty obvious guilt trip that the latter decided to have two best men. Make no mistake, though, Danny wouldn’t have been selected otherwise.

8 They Didn't Interact Much Before Pam's Death

Everything that happened on Full House was a matter of circumstance, with Danny and Jesse’s eventual friendship only possible because of his wife’s death. Before that, it was clear Jesse was hardly around as he was a drifter who only occasionally showed up.

Due to their contrasting personalities and preferences, Danny and Jesse didn’t have much common ground other than Pam. This means, had she not passed, these two wouldn’t have become friends at all, making their overall relationship pretty much circumstantial.

7 They Fought When Danny Married Pam

Not only did these two not have much to do with each other before Danny’s marriage to Pam, Jesse wasn’t thrilled about the marriage in the first place. It mainly had to do with Danny and Pam eloping without inviting Jesse, but he claimed he went so far as to beat Danny up for it.

Jesse also hadn’t been a fan of his sister getting married at such a young age, which implies he wasn’t so fond of Danny either. The fact that Jesse still held a grudge over Danny for the elopement over a decade later does prove how they didn’t have as much of an understanding for Jesse to forgive him.

6 Their Regular Arguments Over Differing Philosophies

The majority of angles surrounding Jesse and Danny had to do with them arguing over who had the better philosophies. This would span the entirety of that particular episode, where the two would attempt to prove they were the correct party.

The most relevant argument to point out here would be when they took Michelle’s class to a trip to the museum, where Danny got angry that his daughter was lured into Jesse’s fun group over his organized one. The two also frequently argued over the boundaries to set for the children rather than find a middle ground as friends would.

5 Jesse Didn't Enjoy Danny's Hugs

This might sound like a weird argument, but the fact of the matter is that Danny loves giving out hugs. Asking “do you want a hug?” could even be considered his catchphrase, and he gave Jesse many of these hugs over the years. Jesse, though, wasn’t a fan of this practice.

Even years after they started living together, Jesse would begrudgingly accept Danny’s embraces, while he was usually quite happy to do the same to Joey. One would think they’d warm up to the idea of hugging after so long, but it seems their relationship wasn’t of that sort.

4 They Weren't Fond Of Each Other's Quirks

Danny’s “thing” was his incessant need for cleaning; Jesse’s was his hair and his laid back attitude. While most of the household found these quirks endearing about these two, they didn’t exactly feel the same way about each other.

On frequent occasions, Danny would criticize Jesse never taking things in life seriously while also not sympathizing with Jesse when Stephanie cut off his hair. Along the same lines, Jesse had little patience for Danny’s cleaning habits, taking shots at this numerous times.

3 They Usually Refer To Each Other As In-Laws Rather Than Friends

There were instances where these two acknowleged being friends, but the majority of times it was as in-laws that they referred to one another. While it implied they kept seeing each other as family, it also meant that their relationship isn't based on friendship.

Both of them also claimed that Joey was their best friend, which makes it appear as if Danny and Jesse still think they’re linked mainly through the former’s marriage. Using the in-law variation gives off the image that things are too formal, and if Danny and Jesse had a stronger connection they would definitely have been friends first.

2 Danny Was Generally Excluded In Jesse And Joey's Activities

The trio of Danny, Jesse, and Joey made the theme of the show what it is, yet Danny slowly moved away from the other two as the seasons progressed. This got to the point where he was hardly around for their shenanigans, with Danny generally watching from the sidelines.

On the occasions he was around, it was with Joey that Danny got included, while Jesse didn’t have any kind of hijinks with him. Danny even mentioned in Season 2 how he felt left out, and while Joey apologized for it, Jesse didn’t spare much thought.

1 They Didn't Consult Each Other On Important Matters

One of the reasons why Jesse was ready to move out in the seventh season finale had to do with Danny never consulting him on important decisions. His complaints included the running of the household done solely by Danny, and even the way the kids were raised.

Danny, too, was miffed several times when Jesse took matters into his own hands, such as removing Michelle from pre-school without Danny’s consent. Despite living together, it’s clear that communication wasn’t part of the relationship, which doesn’t bode well for their status as friends.
