The final battle between Godzilla and Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters flipped a key moment from a previous Godzilla movie. The scene in question came from Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack. Released in 2001, the third installment in Toho's Millennium series serves as a sequel of sorts to the 1954 original, but exists in a separate continuity from all other Godzilla films. The movie stands on its own as a story where Godzilla is a creature with truly evil intentions.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters uses three of the same kaiju that appear in the Toho movie, plus Rodan. In the 2019 MonsterVerse movie, a group of eco-terrorists made a big mistake when they unleashed Ghidorah on the world, wrongly believing that the three-headed monster would save the planet. After Ghidorah positioned himself as the alpha of the Titans, he was challenged by Godzilla, who acts as the Earth's self-appointed protector. With Rodan fighting alongside Ghidorah and Mothra aligning with Godzilla, the four Titans engaged in an epic, final battle. The showdown concluded with a dying Mothra giving her life essence to Godzilla, so that he could finish off Ghidorah.
Mothra's power created Godzilla's burning form, and was what gave him the edge he needed to win. The scene is a twist on what happened in Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah. In this movie, Mothra, Ghidorah, and Baragon are ancient guardians who have to rise up against Godzilla. When Godzilla killed Baragon and Mothra, it was up to Ghidorah to save everyone. Ghidorah received a much-needed boost when Mothra's spirit flowed into his body and transformed him into "King Ghidorah". With his new power, the monster was strong enough to give Godzilla a challenging fight.
It's certainly unusual to see Ghidorah as the hero of the story who needs help from Mothra to beat Godzilla. It's not something that would happen in any other movie, but Godzilla: King of the Monsters is able to use this moment by having Mothra give Godzilla an upgrade instead, which is more traditional than what happened in the 2001 movie. That's because Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah is far from a conventional Godzilla movie. In the film, the ghosts of soldiers killed in World War II possess the dead body of the 1954 Godzilla and use it to orchestrate a murderous rampage on Japan. But as much as it changed Godzilla, it still has a fanbase and was briefly referenced in a different King of the Monsters scene.
It's worth noting that though Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack appears to have influenced the turning point in King of the Monsters' final battle, a different Godzilla movie may have helped inspire it as well. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, Rodan was near death when he landed on top of Godzilla and transferred his life-force into Godzilla. Thanks to Rodan's sacrifice, Godzilla was able to defeat Mechagodzilla and rescue his son from the humans. It goes to show that Legendary's Godzilla: King of the Monsters was able to pay homage to multiple Toho classics.
