In the series finale of 13 Reasons Why Hannah Baker (Katherine Langford) makes an unexpected reappearance for the first time since season 2. Adapted from Jay Asher’s 2007 novel of the same name, Brian Yorkey's Netflix original series follows the aftermath of Hannah Baker’s suicide and the thirteen tapes she distributed to everyone who negatively affected her life before her death.
Season 1, in particular, focused on the distribution of the tapes. Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) narrates the entirety of the series and sets the events of season 1 in motion once he receives the cassettes. Since discovering that he played a part in creating a toxic atmosphere that led Hannah to take her own life, he has struggled with feelings of guilt and a savior complex that he never truly gets over until season 4 of 13 Reasons Why. After Katherine Langford departed from the series after season 2, fans did not expect to see her return, which makes her reappearance in season 4’s finale so surprising.
13 Reasons Why has faced an array of controversies ranging from their mishandling of Hannah’s suicide to the redemption story arc of Bryce Walker in season 3. Fans and critics did not know what to expect from season 4, but it delivered what it is known for – sensitive subject matter and the tragic death of a main character. The most shocking element of the finale was Hannah Baker’s appearance and what it meant for the series and Clay Jensen as a whole.
For an astounding 49 episodes, Clay has never received closure after Hannah’s death. While his friends were able to move on and form new relationships, he was stricken with immense feelings of guilt, shame, and mourning. As a result, he developed a savior complex that did even more mental and emotional harm. After season 1 ended and the series went on, Clay stuck to the belief that he could have saved Hannah and that he could not let another innocent person die. Season 4 was a wake up call for him; it forced Clay to confront the fact that he could not save everyone, including Hannah Baker.
Clay only comes to terms with this fact once he and his remaining friends graduate from Liberty High School in the series finale. As Jessica Davis (Alisha Boe), Tony Padilla (Christian Navarro), Alex Standall (Miles Heizer), Zach Dempsey (Ross Butler), Tyler Down (Devin Druid), and Clay sit in the school gym, Hannah appears to Clay in her Winter Formal dress, seen in season 1, episode 5, “Tape 3, Side A." It is almost an exact replica of the scene they shared when Clay realized he felt deeper feelings for her than he previously let on.
By including this season 1 reference and Hannah in general, the series offered Clay the closure he desperately needed in order to move on. While she does not say anything, Clay has a conversation with Justin about how much Hannah’s death hurt him and how he has never recovered. As he approaches her, he is interrupted by a new love interest signifying that he has moved on. 13 Reasons Why season 4 provided its fans and characters the closure that was necessary for the series to end on through Hannah Baker’s reappearance.
