Leia dresses like a real General in Star Wars old military fan art. The princess of Alderaan is the most famous female character in Star Wars history, hands down. Leia's journey from princess to Resistance General made perfect sense plot-wise because Leia was never afraid to back down from fighting for what was right for the galaxy.
Every good story seems to include a princess that needs to be rescued. Leia, of course, subverted that trope from the get-go. Not only did she set the chain of events in motion to allow Luke to discover his destiny in A New Hope, but Leia went toe to toe with Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader all by herself in the same film. While the princess was fully capable of saving herself, Leia discovered that defeating the Empire would take teamwork and helped save the galaxy with the help of Luke, Han, and company in Return of the Jedi. It was no surprise that Leia ascended to the rank of General by the time The Force Awakens came around. After all, someone had to lead the fight against the First Order.
Thanks to the artistry of Instagram user scadarts, Leia gets the full historical military portrait treatment. The image of Leia is incredible because it looks like a genuine portrait of a General from a bygone era in history. Star Wars fans have had nothing but praise for Leia's painting as well as the fan-art images scadarts created of Tarkin, Palpatine, and Vader as well.
The artistic choice to use the image of a young Leia from A New Hope superimposed on the portrait is excellent because it's so believable. Leia always had the ability to be a general from the very beginning. However, her incredible growth from the beginning of the Skywalker saga to the end where she sacrificed herself to save her son made her ascension to a general so much more satisfying. Leia always worked hard to defend the galaxy she loved, regardless of what title she bore at the time. Her character remains iconic in-universe and in real life. Fans have done everything from this incredible portrait to cosplaying as Leia, to even creating a one-woman symphony to play Leia's famous musical theme. As the quote says, for many, Leia is royalty, but to all, she is eternally beloved. Not for just being a princess or a Resistance general, but for always fighting for what was right. No matter what.
There are many reasons why Star Wars is so incredible. Leia will always remain on the upper echelon of galactic greatness, a true icon, and an incredibly feminist hero. The princess turned general was never perfect and wasn't afraid to fall in love with a scoundrel. However, Leia's primary mission was defending her people regardless of the threat to her safety. Leia was a princess, a general, and above all, a woman who transcended the typical trope of a damsel in distress, blasting the stereotype away with the strength of her will and determination. Long live, Leia.
