Why Friends Star Lisa Kudrow Won’t Rewatch Any Episodes

Lisa Kudrow, best known for her iconic role as Phoebe on the TV sitcom Friends, has said that she hasn’t rewatched any episodes of the show. Ever since Friends came to a close in 2004 after its tenth season, Kudrow has worked on a variety of other projects, including BoJack Horseman and Boss Baby. But though Kudrow has moved on in her career, revisiting her breakout role hasn’t been on the agenda.

This seems to be true of the rest of the cast of Friends as well. There hasn’t been any sort of official Friends reunion in four years, and a few years ago, there were even many signs that a new Friends cast reunion would be totally impossible. The one-off special in 2016 was considered to be less than exciting, and with the cast’s commitments to other projects, scheduling another event would have been a struggle. However, recent news from HBO’s streaming service HBO Max indicates that a Friends reunion is finally on its way.

This is great news for Kudrow, who revealed in a recent interview with Variety that she’s been hesitant to go back and watch old Friends episodes on her own. In a conversation about the show with co-star Jennifer Aniston, Kudrow explained she was worried that rewatching the episodes would give her a negative perspective on the show, tainting all the positive memories she has of the production. “I didn’t want to ruin it,” mentioned Kudrow. “I don’t watch the show. I’m still not watching it in the hopes that one day we sit down and watch them together.

Despite this hesitation, Kudrow did indicate that she’s willing to revisit her old character, Phoebe, just so long as she can do it with the rest of the cast. In the interview, she recalled a fond memory of watching Friends bloopers with co-star Courtney Cox and laughing for hours. In this anecdote, it’s easy to see that even though Kudrow can’t return to the series yet, working on Friends clearly meant a lot to her.

Kudrow’s comments on wanting to watch episodes with the rest of the cast could mean exciting things for Friends fans. With a recent Friends reunion announcement from HBO Max, fans are already looking forward to seeing the gang back together again. The show will be unscripted, so it’s not going to be a sort of narrative episode that fans are familiar with, but viewers should get to see Kudrow’s and the rest of the cast’s genuine reactions to the show. The Coronavirus pandemic has delayed filming for the reunion, but despite the extra wait, this special promises to be fun and exciting, and may give fans a great new look at Phoebe’s character from Kudrow’s perspective.
