Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Main Characters & Their Harry Potter Counterpart

While Harry Potter and Avatar: The Last Airbender are two completely distinct stories, they actually have a lot of similarities. They are both popular fantasy stories that were written for young audiences but appeal to people of all ages.

Also, they both draw from mythology and history, and they also follow some common tropes in fantasy series. As such, there are many The Last Airbender characters that have Harry Potter counterparts.

10 Princess Yue: Luna Lovegood

While Princess Yue isn’t a main character, she is an important one. This is the same with Luna.

They are both characters that have a big impact on those around them, and their big hearts and willingness to be brave to save others from things they have in common. Plus, they are both associated with a dream-like quality that is reminiscent of the moon.

9 Uncle Iroh: Hagrid

Both Iroh and Hagrid are well-loved mentor features from their respective series. They are bothered there to offer support, wisdom, and care to the younger characters around them.

While Iroh is a father figure to his nephew Zuko, Hagrid is one of the most consistent parental figures in Harry’s life. Plus, they both tend to appreciate some of the simple things in life and have a lot of advice.

8 Suki: Ginny Weasley

Ginny and Suki also have a lot in common. They are both a bit underrated as they aren’t a part of the main team of heroes and only show up some of the time.

However, they are both extremely brave, and when they are involved in saving the world, they are willing to give their all. They are both skilled, and they have passionate, no-nonsense personalities.

7 Azula: Bellatrix Lestrange

Azula and Bellatrix seem like the obvious choice as counterparts because they are both two intense, terrifying female villains. Both of these women are particularly cruel and committed to the causes of evil that they champion.

In many ways, they are two of the most terrifying villains from their franchises, and they both clearly struggle with some mental issues that make them both seem unstable.

6 Firelord Ozai: Lord Voldemort

This is another obvious comparison because Ozai and Voldemort are the main bad guys from their series. They are both interested in taking over the world and want power over anything else.

Plus, they both oppress and murder innocent people that they think are lesser because of who they are and where they were born. They are both the “final bosses” of both of these stories.

5 Zuko: Draco Malfoy

These two also have a lot of similarities. They are both well-loved characters in their fandoms, and they have a similar energy of wanting to prove themselves to their fathers.

They both start out as villains but end up not being so bad. While Zuko’s redemption arc is much more obvious and he even becomes a part of Team Avatar, Draco does also depart from the way he was raised and end up not even completely hating Harry in the end.

4 Toph: Neville Longbottom

While Neville and Toph have quite a few differences, they also make the most sense as counterparts for a couple of reasons. They both come from families that don’t really respect them or see them as capable, and they grow up to be extremely fierce, capable fighters who are essential to the respective fights.

Toph is overall a much tougher character from the start while Neville takes a while longer to grow into himself, but there are some obvious parallels that can be drawn here.

3 Sokka: Ron Weasley

One obvious similarity between Harry Potter and The Last Airbender is that the main characters are a team of three young teens with one girl and two boys.

Sokka and Ron are the more comedic characters in the group and also the two that struggle because they aren’t seen as being as strong as the other two. However, they both have important and essential skills to offer and are essential parts of these trios.

2 Katara: Hermione Granger

Katara and Hermione have many things in common. First of all, they are the girls of their trios that are often put in similar situations of having to be more prepared and more capable than the boys to get recognition.

They are both extremely intelligent, brave, and talented. Katara is one of the best waterbenders while Hermione is one of the smartest and most talented witches. They are both willing to do everything they can to protect others and fight back against oppression.

1 Aang: Harry Potter

As the main protagonists of their franchises, Harry and Aang do have a lot in common. They were both destined and chosen in ways to become the heroes of their worlds and save others from the antagonist.

They both have to go through a lot of challenges and learning experiences to become strong enough to defeat the bad guy, and they both rely on the help and support of their friends to achieve this end.
