Batwoman: 5 Best Fight Scenes From Season 1 (& 5 That Let Fans Down)

Batwoman’s first season got off to a rocky start, but the show found its footing as it continued. By the time the latter half of the season had arrived, many aspects of the Arrowverse series had noticeably improved — and the action sequences, in particular, saw an obvious uptick in quality.

Kate Kane had a number of impressive fights toward the end of season one that could be classified as her "best," and it’s clear that her character got better at being Batwoman as the show got better at telling her story. Here are the five best fight scenes from Batwoman so far (and five that left fans disappointed).

10 Best: Breaking Into Arkham

“Through the Looking-Glass” is an episode full of surprises, and the outstanding fight choreography as Alice and Kate break into Arkham Asylum is among them. Although both characters stick to Kate's "no-killing" rule, they certainly don't mind knocking out a few security guards to get them out of the way -- and Kate manages to do so with impressive moves.

Although Kate always demonstrated a talent for self-defense, watching her use her skills -- and the walls around her -- to overtake the security guards, most of whom are bigger than her, will leave fans cheering and wanting to see more. Unfortunately, they'll have to wait for her next trip to Arkham to experience something similar.

9 Disappointing: Kate vs. Tommy Elliot, Take One

Kate first comes face to face with Tommy Elliot during “Down, Down, Down,” which is fairly early on in her vigilante career. For that reason, her fight with Bruce Wayne’s nemesis isn’t all that exciting — in fact, Kate’s early fighting style is sloppy and disappointing.

Sure, Kate's "That's the point" in response to Tommy's sentiment that she's not Batman is exciting, but watching her fight, it's clear that she's relying too much on brute strength and luck to defeat him -- and he gains the upper hand more than once while going up against her.

8 Best: Kate vs. Tommy Elliot: Rematch

The next time Kate runs into Tommy Elliot, she’s more prepared to face him — and she sends him cowering back to Alice and Mouse after she saves Parker from his clutches. This happens in "A Secret Kept From All the Rest," after Tommy's transformed into the comic villain Hush -- and although Hush's big debut may be a bit disappointing, seeing that Kate's mastered using the Batsuit and the weapons that accompany it more than makes up for that fact.

Not only does Kate's second fight with Tommy prove that she's learned how to use the suit and the weapons she's been granted in a skillful and strategic way, but it portrays Batwoman's lead with a newfound confidence that's enthralling to watch.

7 Disappointing: Batwoman vs. The Executioner

When Batwoman faces the Executioner in “I’ll Be Judge, I’ll Be Jury,” there's plenty of thought-provoking dialogue, but it doesn't make up for the fact that Kate's fighting style is still so messy at this point in the series. Sure, fighting a villain so much larger and stronger than her was never going to be easy, but Kate can barely keep up with the Executioner's attacks -- even though she should have agility on her side.

In fact, Kate's defenses during this fight scene are so off that Jacob is the one responsible for saving her -- and then she nearly gets herself arrested, further emphasizing the fact that she has a lot of work to do when it comes to this vigilante thing.

6 Best: Breaking Out Of Arkham

If Kate's Arkham break-in was impressive, her breaking out of the asylum -- after Alice has unleashed its most dangerous prisoners -- is truly something to behold. After Alice pulls the lever that releases Arkham's prisoners, the place quickly turns to chaos, with those who have been imprisoned overtaking guards and attacking anyone in their way.

And although Kate couldn't possibly take on all the prisoners, she does a solid job of handling herself and getting out Arkham unscathed. (She even saves a guard or two in the process!) The choreography during this scene is stunning, and the show should embrace similar fight sequences moving forward.

5 Disappointing: Batwoman vs. Magpie, Take One

Although it's always great to see two badass ladies in action, Batwoman's first fight with Magpie in "Who Are You?" is packed with cringey dialogue that plagues many of Batwoman's early fight scenes.

It also shows a lot of combat know-how without actually having Kate land any strikes or successfully defend herself against the villain, emphasizing that Kate's a newbie still.

4 Best: Batwoman vs. Magpie: Rematch

Kate runs into plenty of trouble while trying to retrieve Lucius Fox's journal in "If You Believe in Me, I'll Believe in You." She also runs into an old acquaintance -- Magpie -- who attempts to take the journal from her. Luckily, Kate's fighting skills are up to par at this point in the season, and she handles the villain much better than she did in "Who Are You?"

Even when Kate leaves Magpie with no choice but to throw the journal off the roof, Kate makes a stellar save, diving after it and using her grappling gun to pull herself back up. It's a bit cheesy, but it's a big moment for her.

3 Disappointing: Batwoman vs. Nocturna

Apart from the corny dialogue that makes up the fight between Batwoman and Nocturna (did anyone really think a killer vampire would be Kate's type?), it's hard to believe that Kate would let her guard down long enough to be bitten by a villain who's publicly using her fangs to stun her victims.

And even during the brief moments when Batwoman and Nocturna do engage in physical combat, the latter shakes Kate off far too easily to make the fight an engaging one.

2 Best: Batwoman vs. Titan

Batwoman's season finale has a lot going for it, but the fight scenes stand out as some of the best moments from the episode. "O, Mouse!" shows Tim Teslow, or the Titan, on the run after his escape from Arkham -- and naturally, Kate tries to track him down to put him back behind bars.

Showing improvement since her fight against the Executioner, Kate manages to defend herself against Tim -- who is much larger than her -- with impressive maneuvering. (And her entrance during the football stadium scene is truly something to behold.)

1 Disappointing: Batwoman vs. The Crows

Given that Jacob surrounds Batwoman and leaves her with no option to go on the offense, it's hard to qualify her encounter with the Crows at the end of season one as a "fight" -- but that's what's so disappointing: It should have been.

After Jacob's betrayal, it would have been satisfying to see Batwoman lash out against the men who turned their backs on her. Unfortunately, it would take more than this for Kate to do anything that would genuinely upset or hurt her father.
