Canada's Drag Race season 1 is among us, and fans are starting to get to know a dozen Queens of the North who have now joined the greater RuPaul's Drag Race franchise. When it comes to storylines related to talented LGBTQ+ artists, Drag Race is one of the best shows out there.
With that said, there is only so much that Canada's Drag Race can show, given that there's still a competition to be won. If you love the queens who were cast on the series, this is your chance to learn more about them.
12 Anastarzia Anaquway
Anastarzia Anaquway is known as a legendary pageant queen in Canada. However, many fans don't know that she was catapulted to such fame very quickly. In fact, it was only a few months between getting into drag for the first time and competing in a pageant - and yet, Anastarzia took home the crown.
Furthermore, it is of note that Anastarzia Anaquway is from Nassau, The Bahamas, and has been doing drag for over 17 years. She is the oldest contestant on this first season of Canada's Drag Race.
11 BOA
In the first episode of Canada's Drag Race, fans learned that BOA is an acronym for "B**ch On Arrival." However, many don't know that it also happens to be her real legal last name. Out of drag, BOA is called Ryan Boa.
BOA's first time in drag was for a friend's party, where she performed a number inspired by the music video for Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball." Moreover, the Grinch is a character that BOA has done on multiple occasions before her time on Canada's Drag Race, turning the angry green character into a fabulous drag pageant contender.
10 Ilona Verley
Ilona Verley grew up in the Skuppah First Nation in British Columbia, then moved to Vancouver as an adult to pursue a career in drag. Before Canada's Drag Race, Ilona spent some time in Los Angeles performing as a drag entertainer, but the queen has since moved back to Canada.
It is also of note that Ilona Verley actually has an impressive background as a makeup artist, having gone to school at the prestigious Blanche MacDonald Centre in Vancouver.
9 Jimbo
Many of RuPaul's Drag Race queens have joked over the years that they were no different from clowns. However, Jimbo takes this one step further, given that she actually trained and worked as a clown for many years.
When the Canada's Drag Race cast was announced, Jimbo did not have a Twitter account, despite being a heavy user of Instagram. At 36 years old, Jimbo is only one year younger than Anastarzia Anaquway, which makes them the two oldest contestants on the show.
8 Juice Boxx
This wasn't brought up on the show, but Juice Boxx has actually been together with her high school sweetheart for about 17 years. In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Juice revealed that she and her husband are inseparable and that they only got married for legal reasons.
On Canada's Drag Race, Juice Boxx also opened up about her journey with sobriety and experienced a full-blown panic attack on the runway while receiving critiques. What fans may not know is that the queen has always been very open about those two things on social media.
7 Kiara
Kiara is one of two Quebec queens on Canada's Drag Race season 1. This queen started out doing drag at 19 years old after already being a fan of RuPaul's Drag Race for a few years.
When her career began to take off, Kiara quit school – she attended the CĂ©gep de Sainte-Foy in Montreal – and left her job in order to focus exclusively on drag. Moreover, it is noteworthy that Rita Baga gave Kiara her first gig as a drag queen.
6 Kyne
Kyne is of Filipino heritage and from Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. Prior to the Canada's Drag Race cast announcement, Kyne was the most-followed contestant on social media, largely due to the fact that she had a famous YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers.
Recently, the queen has also been steadily growing on other social networks, such as TikTok.
5 Lemon
Lemon is from Canada but has chosen to represent New York City on Canada's Drag Race, making her the only contestant on the show to not represent a Canadian city.
Before Canada's Drag Race, Lemon had already been roommates with Jan and belonged to the same drag family as Brita, both of whom competed on RuPaul's Drag Race season 12. Moreover, Lemon is a professional contemporary ballet dancer who has collaborated with Drag Race season 9 winner Sasha Velour on a New York Fashion Week event.
4 Priyanka
Prior to doing drag, Priyanka had a successful career being one of the hosts of The Zone, a children's TV show. In 2015, she also hosted the Kids Choice Awards Countdown special event.
Before Canada's Drag Race, Priyanka had done drag for about three years. Then, after being cast on the show, Priyanka became the first-ever contestant in the entire RuPaul's Drag Race franchise to be of Guyanese descent.
3 Rita Baga
Like Tynomi Banks and Anastarzia Anaquway, Rita Baga was already a legendary drag performer in Canada prior to being cast on Canada's Drag Race. All in all, Rita has been doing drag for over 13 years.
According to Rita Baga, she lost 125 pounds in recent years, stating that weight gain and loss has been a constant struggle that she's had to live through during her lifetime.
2 Scarlett BoBo
Scarlett BoBo has a background in circus school and had been doing drag for over a decade before getting cast on Canada's Drag Race. A Humber College graduate, Scarlett has a degree in Public Relations, but always wanted to do something more artistic and performative.
As her name suggests, red is Scarlett BoBo's favorite color. According to the queen, she took on "BoBo" from her drag mother – it means "silly."
1 Tynomi Banks
Tynomi Banks was already a legendary queen before she even stepped into the Canada's Drag Race workroom. Among Tynomi's various accomplishments, she has partnered with brands like Crest, Spotify, Netflix, and IKEA for content creation and marketing campaigns.
In 2019, Tynomi Banks was also featured in the Canada's a Drag docu-series, which won a Canadian Screen Award the following year. When the Canada's Drag Race cast was announced, Tynomi was the only contestant who was already verified on Instagram.
