Warning: SPOILERS for DCeased.
In the upcoming DCeased: Dead Planet, the surviving heroes of this unique zombie apocalypse return to Earth after five years, responding to a distress beacon from this supposedly planet of the dead. Unbeknownst to them the beacon was sent out by former Justice League member Cyborg... who is trying to make amends for his role in starting the infection that decimated the planet.
In the original DCeased, Cyborg was kidnapped by an angry Darkseid and infected with a corrupted version of the Anti-Life Equation, and Boom Tubed back to Earth--becoming Patient Zero for an untested techno-organic virus. With millions infected and left in a gory, violent state, Cyborg fought alongside Earth's heroes as they struggled to contain the end of the world. In the end, survivors chose to either flee into space, or find sanctuary in a community under the protection of Poison Ivy. As one final, cruel twist, Cyborg discovered in his interrogation of an infected Wonder Woman that he unknowingly carried the cure for the virus all along... before being decapitated. But hope isn't lost just yet.
Now in DC's first preview of Dead Planet #1, DCeased writer Tom Taylor and artist Trevor Hairsine return along with artists Stefano Gaudiano and Gigi Baldassini to continue the story, as the new Justice League of Earth-2 return to the dead Earth responding to a distress call. What they find will most likely shock, surprise, and horrify. And it's safe to assume some of them won't be returning to tell the others about their discoveries, as seen by these preview pages below:
That's right, Cyborg did not die from his concluding dismemberment, and five years later he is surviving only on that guilt of not just helping start the apocalypse, but possessing the cure in total secret. One day he discovers the secret tracker that had been placed within his operating systems by Batman. In DCeased #1, Batman revealed that he had placed the tracker there without Victor's knowledge believing that they still didn't know enough about Vic's combination of Earth and Apokoliptan technology to completely let their guard down. While the team debated the morality of Batman's decision making, the Bat-GPS did nothing to prevent the initial infection and now Batman's obsession with contingency could doom humanity's second chance at survival.
Upon discovering the tracker, Vic overlooks this clear betrayal and sees an opportunity to make things right... before he no longer has the ability to do so. He uses whatever energy he has remaining to boost the signal of the beacon as it echoes past the quarantined Earth towards Earth-2, the current home of the survivors and their new Justice League currently in battle with space invaders. The question is not will the heroes answer the call, but what new horrors will they find waiting for them on their abandoned home? Will Cyborg's attempt for redemption end up only adding more guilt and sins upon his disembodied head? Time will tell. But in the DCeased universe, sometimes dead is better.
DCeased: Dead Planet #1 will be released July 7th, 2o20 with a primary cover by artist David Finch, a card stock variant cover by artist Francesco Mattina, and a card stock movie homage variant cover by artist Ben Oliver.
