An update coming to newer models of Fitbit trackers will make the devices capable of detecting the optimal time to wake you up. The system uses the fitness tracker's existing sleep profiles and makes a call for when to trigger your alarm based on the wearer's specific sleep timing. Ideally, this option will help ensure people don't wake up during deep sleep and have a slow start to their morning.
Fitbit has a long history of extensive sleep tracking systems. The current toolset will track a wearer's sleep stages based on when they went to bed and how their heart rate fluctuates during sleep. The Fitbit app compiles that data indefinitely, so, after a few days, the platform can form sleep profiles on a person and begin to make recommendations. Sleep data is broken down into time spent within individual sleep cycles, so you're able to check the app and see how many minutes per night you were in REM versus deep sleep, and so on. The system has matured to a point where its data has been used to literally save lives.
Update 1.96.29, which is already rolling out for users of the newest Fitbit, the Fitbit Charge 4, brings an additional layer to the sleep tracking services on Fitbit. The feature is called Smart Wake and it uses some common information from sleep science to make a determination around when to wake the wearer. Deep sleep is widely regarded as the period of sleep during which a person is hardest to awaken, as muscles tend to relax and outside stimuli become less effective. Waking up during deep sleep usually leads to severe grogginess. Therefore, Smart Wake highlights a window within 30 minutes before the user's pre-set alarm time (it can't be after because then the alarm would be pointless) and will only trigger the alarm while they're in the light sleep stage: the optimal stage from which to awaken. Otherwise, it'll just ring the alarm at the set time.
Smart Wake for Fitbit Charge 4 is added in the most recent firmware, along with a few other features like Dynamic GPS. That means all you'll have to do to get it is to update your Fitbit device. If your Fitbit app is updated to the latest version, open it, and run a sync to your Fitbit. After that, tap the profile picture (or the icon in the top-left corner of the app). From this menu tap the image of your Fitbit. The next screen will show information specific to your device and if you don't have the update yet, there should be a pink "Update" button. If you do have the update, you should see the option to turn on Smart Wake once you set a new alarm, and press the back button.
