Actor Bill Pullman asks fans to wear face masks this Fourth of July. Pullman is most known for playing President Whitmore in Independence Day back in 1996, before reprising the role a decade later for Independence Day: Resurgence. Pullman, and President Whitmore, are usually remembered around this time of the year due to his now-famous speech about protecting the world from annihilation and celebrating Independence Day.
It's a well-known fact that the film industry has taken a huge hit because of COVID-19. Movie theaters began closing in March as studios were forced to shut down productions as well as delay the releases of their upcoming films. Theaters have still not opened, but many chains like AMC and Regal are said to be opening at the end of this month. However, with the recent spike in Coronavirus cases, it's reported that studios may push August movie releases dates back to September. Fans are eager to get back to theaters, which is partly why Pullman is urging fans to wear masks this Fourth of July.
In a new video from Alamo Drafthouse, Pullman asks fans to put on a face mask as they celebrate Independence Day. In the PSA, Pullman explains that he will be wearing his "freedom mask" whenever he goes to public places to celebrate the Fourth of July. Pullman continues by saying if everyone in the country wore a "freedom mask" citizens could finally go back to bars, restaurants, and, most importantly, movie theaters.
Along with social distancing, and washing your hands, wearing a face mask is believed to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Big movie theater chains such as AMC, Regal, and Alamo Drafthouse will require face masks when they eventually open. Theme parks are following these same rules, with Universal Studios and Disney Resorts requiring face masks upon entering the parks. Several famous celebrities have also done their part by posting images and videos of themselves wearing a face mask to show the importance of following the guidelines of the CDC, much like Pullman did today.
While Pullman may not be the most influential person to stress the importance of face masks, his video will certainly get attention today. His famous Independence Day speech is often quoted around the country every Fourth of July, and many people are looking to watch Independence Day as well. More and more states and businesses are cracking down on face mask requirements, but there's no telling when the world will get back to "normal," even if people listen to President Whitmore's advice.
