Nadia Jagessar has been launched into instant stardom, thanks to Indian Matchmaking. The Netflix dating reality show follows Mumbai’s top matchmaker, Sima Taparia, as she travels across continents to find suitable matches for her wealthy clients. Out of the dramatic stories of these lonely singles, one that particularly resonated with fans was Vinay Chadha ghosting Nadia – twice. But the tables turned when Vinay accused Nadia of ghosting him instead. To make things spicier (and more confusing), Nadia responded to his claims with an even bigger revelation.
It started out as a typical Bollywood boy-meets-girl story. Although Nadia Jagessar, a New Jersey-based events planner and marketer, met Vinay Chadda, a finance expert from New York, for an arranged marriage, sparks flew instantly. Matched by Sima Taparia, the Indian Matchmaking couple bonded over hating ketchup and went on several dates. But then, viewers watched as Vinay stood professional dancer Nadia up, not once but twice. It hurt Nadia more the second time around, and she broke down in tears to the camera and called Vinay “shady.” To viewers, Vinay instantly fell into the bad-boy category, but he soon claimed via Instagram that he was falsely accused. His version of the story even declared that certain scenes on the show were scripted and blamed the production crew of Indian Matchmaking for changing his storyline.
Meanwhile, as fans kept asking Nadia for her response to these allegations, she stayed tight-lipped...until now. In an interview with NY Post, Nadia finally addressed Vinay’s ghosting accusations. She confessed, “I have some messages where I said I don’t wish to pursue anything further, and he did keep reaching out and I ignored him." Her statement seemingly hinted at Vinay's story bearing some truth. “So if he considers that ghosting, that’s fine,” she added about Vinay. who earlier admitted to crying on the couch after their relationship ended, something viewers also saw Nadia do on Indian Matchmaking. "Don’t be mad at me. I am not the producer or the person who created the show,” she professed. “I am a piece of this puzzle, just as you were,” Nadia spoke in a message that seems to be directed towards Vinay. A tweet below shows Vinay's DMs to a fan where he can be seen calling out the producers:
Indian Matchmaking’s creator, Smriti Mundhra, shared in an interview that the show was initially filmed with 12 of Taparia’s clients, but only a select few were focused on by the producers during the final cut. This statement along with Vinay and Nadia’s declarations could mean that the show indeed chopped off bits and pieces that weren’t deemed interesting enough. Nadia’s crying on the couch was likely a more meme-worthy and eye-grabbing scene, rather than Vinay sobbing away after being ignored.
The realness of reality TV is always contested, but it’s the plot-twists that happen off-screen that really provide that dash of drama. Vinay and Nadia carried their on-screen drama into real life, providing tons of entertainment for fans of the new Netflix series. Still, Nadia's explanation makes sense. If she told Vinay she didn't want a relationship and then chose to ignore him, she certainly didn't ghost him. Perhaps Vinay is just desperately clinging to some way out of his newfound bad reputation.
All episodes of Indian Matchmaking are now available to stream on Netflix.
