For 15 years, Supernatural followed the lives of Sam and Dean Winchester. Through father issues and killing demons, it invited a wide cast of characters. Not all of these characters were treated with the same amount of respect. Some flitted in and out, never to be seen again.
Some were on the screen far too much and were undeserving of the audiences' attention. With Supernatural coming to an end after the upcoming season, many characters were worth the journey, and some were only a time waste.
10 Underrated: Meg
Hitting the scene in season one, Meg’s true nature did not take long to reveal itself. Taking the name of the human girl that she possessed, Meg was a compelling villain. Intent on furthering Lucifer’s bid for Armageddon, she was the face of the demon revolution.
Falling into the shortlist of women not used for plot devices, Meg became less of a villain and more of a delightful, morally gray friend of convenience. She endeared herself to the team by taking care of Castiel during his stint in the hospital. She is loyal to the Winchesters until her death at the hands of Crowley.
9 Overrated: Ruby
Ruby took on many forms on her tenure on Supernatural. First portrayed by Katie Cassidy in season three, Ruby wormed her way into the Winchester’s lives by acting as though she were on their side.
In all subsequent seasons she appeared in, Ruby was portrayed by Jared Padalecki’s real-life wife, Genevieve Padelecki. And though she played a long con, she ultimately revealed her true colors. She convinced Sam to drink demon blood in preparation for him to break the seal and start the apocalypse. Sam’s blind devotion to her was taxing and ultimately fruitless.
8 Underrated: Lucifer
Though not the most sympathetic of characters, Lucifer’s presence was undeniable. His goal was simple. But more than that, Lucifer’s adversity had complexity. His intent to take possession of Sam’s body and fight Michael to the death had nuance.
Lucifer was not portrayed as a Devil with no rhyme or reason. He used to be an angel and loved God more than humanity. For that, he was cast out. His story is a direct mirror of Sam and Dean’s struggle with their father issues.
7 Overrated: Sam Winchester
Holding the Winchester’s title of black sheep of the family, Sam had always been resistant to the family business. While he was formidable in his own right, his actions caused a rift in the family, as well as endangered lives.
His foray into drinking demon blood was on the top of the list of reasons he endangered the mission. As the younger brother, he was always the one that needed to be protected, and the case of losing his soul became the largest liability of all.
6 Underrated: The Harvelle Women
Another victim of Supernatural's tendency to kill off self-sufficient women, Ellen and Jo Harvelle were cut down too soon in season five. Esteemed hunters in their own right, the Harvelles helped the Winchesters in attempting to stop the end of the world.
Jo was the only woman to turn Dean’s advances down and Ellen was a de facto mother to the Winchesters. Their ends came tragically at the hands of hellhounds.
5 Overrated: Adam
Supernatural forgot about Adam almost as easily as Sam and Dean did. Their half-brother appeared when he was most needed and gone just as quickly. He was nothing more than a device that absolved Dean of having to fight Sam in the showdown in season five.
The Winchesters were part of a line that provided preferable hosts to archangels such as Michael and Lucifer. Adamant that he did not want to bring about the Apocalypse as the agents of heaven intended, Dean refused to let Michael possess him. Instead, Michael took over Adam’s body and when it came down to it, he was thrown into the hell pit so Dean could be spared.
4 Underrated: Sheriff Jody Mills
In and out of Supernatural since season five, Sheriff Jody Mills was a welcome addition to the crew. While barely used to fulfill her potential, this also meant that she would be spared from being killed off like many before her.
She was introduced as an acquaintance of Bobby’s in Sioux Falls and was quickly accepted into the fold of demon hunting. She went through every hunter’s rite of passage by losing someone she loved. The true tragedy, however, was the potential spinoff following her and her daughters was never picked up.
3 Overrated: Mary Winchester
Mary’s death was the catalyst for the men of Supernatural. After her murder at the hands of a demon, John Winchester took his sons and raised them in a life of hunting demons. Mary was the vision of purity, one of the many women of the show who were created just so they could die.
Supernatural attempted to make this right by featuring her from time to time, first as a demon hunter in the 1970s and again by resurrecting her. Attempting to build her back up fell short when she was killed off just as quickly in season 14.
2 Underrated: Death
Death was always a mysterious character. One of the four horsemen of the apocalypse, his true allegiance leans more towards his purpose than anything God had planned. He was the only one of the horsemen that did not believe in Lucifer’s bid to start the end of the world.
Lucifer controlled Death when the world started to end. Dean went to a Chicago restaurant, intent on killing him. What he found was an apathetic horseman with a love of pizza. Though emotionally cut off from the plight of humans, Death gave Dean his ring so he could put Lucifer back in his cage.
1 Overrated: Jess
Jess was always meant to be a mirror of Sam and Dean’s mother. She was a symbol of Sam pulling away from the family and her death pushed him back into the life. While Supernatural seems to be aware of their gender problem, Jess’s presence on the show was only ever meant as a plot device.
Jess’s death was always one of the main points in Sam’s mythology. Jess died too soon before the audience could get to know her and mourn the loss. Sam continued for a long time brooding over a cheap gimmick.
