The Biggest Zack Snyder's Justice League Reveals From JusticeCon

The fan-led JusticeCon has proven to be a crowd-pleasing success, with lots of new information unveiled regarding Zack Snyder's Justice League - so here's a breakdown of all the biggest reveals. The ambitious team-up movie was originally designed to be part one of a two-part story. One which would have pit various DC Comics heroes against the otherworldly forces of Darkseid. Following Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, the DCEU installment was set to be directed by Snyder and pay off numerous threads from previous adventures.

Unfortunately, a personal tragedy meant he had to step away during production. Stepping in, Joss Whedon overhauled Justice League's story and character arcs. The results proved underwhelming and failed to make a mark at the box office, with Justice League displaying a tone incongruous to not only the rest of the DCEU but how the film was originally conceived.

In the two years now since Justice League was released in theaters, fans campaigned tirelessly for Snyder's original vision to be released. Efforts in pursuit of that aim manifested in crowdfunded billboards, a protracted Twitter campaign that trended worldwide for multiple days around the film's anniversary, and much more. Snyder himself fuelled the passions of campaigners, often sharing new details and images on social media. Snyder wasn't alone, however, with many Justice League stars - including even Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck - eventually lending their voices in support. In a surprising turn, the campaign eventually bore fruit. Snyder announced that he would actually get to complete his version of the film and that it would air on HBO Max in 2021.

In celebration of that fact, many of the prominent campaigners organized JusticeCon. In conjunction with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - for which the "Release the Snyder Cut" campaign raised over $150,000 - the event ran across July 25th and 26th. The event featured several fascinating panels, including a spotlighted talk with Snyder himself. There were also panels with producer Deborah Snyder, Darkseid actor Ray Porter, and Cyborg star Ray Fisher. Along the way, lots of new information was revealed to further excite and tease fans. Here's a rundown of the biggest reveals.

No doubt the biggest offering of JusticeCon was a sneak peek shared by Snyder during his talk. The short and simple clip featured Superman (Henry Cavill) meeting Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred (Jeremy Irons). The moment was teased in a previous trailer, but didn't actually make it into the theatrical release. What made the scene all the more special, however, was that Superman was finally seen wearing his black suit from the comics. According to Snyder, Warner Bros were hesitant to feature the black suit, thinking the movie shouldn't veer too dark. Snyder, however, argued that there was nothing light about somebody returning from the dead. As a compromise, though, he filmed Cavill in the original suit and then changed the color in post-production.

Throughout the "Release the Snyder Cut" campaign, Snyder teased that his resurrection of Superman would be vastly different from the one seen in the theatrical release. The glimpse of the black suit served as a testament to that fact. Snyder reminded the moderators and fans watching, however, that the scene is far from finished. Despite that and the clip being released on stream - and thus nowhere near an HD level - fans were overjoyed with the footage and even more eager for the film to finally be released.

Throughout his talk, Snyder avoided talking about or even naming the Justice League theatrical release. However, when asked whether his cut of the film would use anything Whedon produced in the reshoots, he felt compelled to offer a definitive statement. "I'd destroy the movie before I use a single frame that I didn't photograph," he said. "That is a f--king hard fact. I'd blow the f--king thing up!" He went on to caveat that should there be any shots that match with something from Whedon's version, it would be because Snyder himself shot it and it was repurposed for the theatrical release. Given that Snyder maintained that he still hadn't watched a single frame of what he labeled "the Frankenstein's monster" that was released in 2017, that will be for fans to compare and spot for themselves.

In terms of new footage, Snyder also revealed that fans wouldn't have to wait too much longer. The DC FanDome has been confirmed to be taking place across 24 straight hours, starting at 10 am PT on August 22. Equally, it was previously announced that the Snyder Cut of Justice League would have an official presence. Asked during JusticeCon, Snyder went a step further and conveyed that an official teaser trailer would be shown at the event.

Since it was announced that his version of the film would see the light of day, the question has remained how far along in production he was. The fact that there is enough for at least a teaser will offer somewhat of an answer on that front. For obvious reasons, he couldn't divulge what fans could expect to be included in the trailer, even teasingly. As much as he no doubt would have loved to share more at the fan-oriented event, he remained as constrained as other DC directors - despite finally having more of a free reign over the film.

The news of the new teaser wasn't the only thing Snyder confirmed, however. Since the officially HBO Max announcement, many have been equally curious whether Justice League would remain a movie or be reworked into a miniseries. Snyder revealed that the answer to that question would equally be answered next month. "You'll find out at FanDome," he stated when asked directly. "But I think I did tell Grace [Randolph] that it was longer than 214 [minutes] now. Either way, a hundred percent I'll be happy. Look, the truth is, regardless of how it comes out, you'll always be able to watch it [in one sitting]."

Given how binge-watching has become almost the standard way to consume content, that will no doubt be true if it turns out to be a series. Of course, that could always be offset by HBO Max, should they choose to air the episodes weekly. With that decision, after all, they would be able to sustain for a longer period the subscriptions of those signing up just for Justice League. Whatever the case, however, full details will officially be known in the coming weeks.

During his own spotlight panel, Ray Porter revealed that he didn't film any scenes with Jesse Eisenberg. Porter was originally cast to play the villainous Darkseid before being cut from the theatrical release. In his stead, the underwhelming Steppenwolf was made the primary antagonist. Officially reinstated for the Snyder Cut, Darkseid has already been teased in previously released images and clips. Eisenberg, of course, debuted as Lex Luthor during Batman v Superman. He would later return for a post-credits cameo of the theatrical Justice League. Porter was asked directly whether he had worked with Eisenberg. "I didn't, no. I admire him a great deal as an actor, but I did not get to work with him, no."

However, when it was mentioned by a moderator that speculation exists that Luthor and Darkseid have a scene together, Porter was a touch more non-committal. Offering a wry smile, he partly avoids the question and simply stated that such a meeting would make for a "genius" scene. As such, there's every chance that a such a scene does, in fact, exist in the film but that Porter and Eisenberg had to film their parts separately. This could easily be because of something as simple as scheduling conflicts and could just as easily be achieved with green screen. Whatever the case, JusticeCon served up a great deal with which eager fans can whet their appetites while waiting for further news and Snyder's version of Justice League to officially release.
