The Office: John Krasinski Tricked Showrunner Into Letting Him Wear A Wig

John Krasinski wore a wig during season 3 of The Office, and he tricked showrunner Greg Daniels to do it. Krasinski played lovable trickster Jim Halpert for all nine seasons of The Office, the iconic workplace comedy following the employees of a fictional paper company. The series was popular throughout its run on NBC, but it has proved to be especially enduring in the years since its completion, with many moments becoming memes. Currently, The Office is available to watch on Netflix, but it will depart at the end of this year to join its new streaming home, Peacock.

Krasinski will always be best known for playing Jim, but he's made quite a name for himself since The Office ended. He currently stars on Amazon's Jack Ryan as the titular character, and he starred and directed in 2018's hit horror film A Quiet Place. The sequel, A Quiet Place 2, was scheduled for March of this year before it was postponed to September because of the coronavirus pandemic. Krasinski made the most of the pandemic, though, when he created the web series Some Good News, a show made specially for sharing positive news. Krasinski wrapped his run by selling the show to CBS, which will transform it into an actual television program.

Mashable recently interviewed one of The Office's lead hair stylists, Kim Ferry, who shared a hilarious story involving Kransinski and his season 3 wig. During the back half of the season, Krasinski wanted to star in the film Leatherheads alongside George Clooney. However, the role would have required him to cut his hair, which Daniels was opposed to. This led to Krasinski seeking out Ferry's help in making a wig. "He paid for the wig — a human hair wig made by a friend of mine, Natascha Ladek, who's the best wig maker in town," Ferry explained. Krasinski put on the wig and filmed some scenes, then went straight to Daniels' office.

Ferry thought for sure she would lose her job for this, especially when writer B.J. Novak (who also starred as Ryan the temp) echoed Daniels' opinion about Krasinski wearing a wig. Ferry followed Krasinski to Daniels' office and was called in after he spoke with Krasinski. As Ferry explained, "The first thing Greg said was, 'Wow. You guys have balls,' and then goes, 'but I have to say I didn't see that coming.'" Fans of Krasinski will know he did go on to appear in Leatherheads, and he wore the wig for the final six episodes of season 3.

Truthfully, this plan feels like something that would've come from Jim's own mind. Jim was best known for all the pranks he pulled on co-worker Dwight (Rainn Wilson). Those pranks are often the parts most fondly remembered by fans of The Office, who are still clamoring for a reunion. Krasinski supplied some small ones on Some Good News when he brought on Steve Carell and Jenna Fischer, but there are many who want more. Only time will tell if it'll actually happen, but at least there are still plenty of fun memories to be revealed.
