The Office: Why Michael’s Final Scene Was With Pam

Before Michael Scott flew to Colorado to be with the love of his life, which subsequently ended his time on The Office, the character had one final scene with Pam. Steven Carell may have been forced out by NBC, but his presence as the Dunder Mifflin's regional manager would not be forgotten. Michael was already the man in charge when The Office started in 2005. At that point, Pam worked as the receptionist and was an easy target of Michael's odd requests and inappropriate jokes. Even though Michael hit on her a few times early in the series, he eventually backed off and treated her more like a close friend.

Michael was there to celebrate Pam's marriage to Jim (John Krasinski) and the birth of the couple's first child. It was only fitting that Pam guided Michael in the right direction when he was ready to propose to Holly (Amy Ryan) in season 7. Michael's last episode as a series regular came in The Office season 7 episode appropriately titled "Goodbye, Michael."

It was Michael's final day at work, but his employees were led to believe his last hurrah was coming the following day. Deeply saddened by the truth, Michael tried to spend time with each member of the office. Unfortunately, Pam was unaware that it was truly Michael's last day and she was out of the office. And so, Michael eventually left for the airport without saying goodbye to Pam. As he walked through the airport, Pam rushed on-screen to give her boss an emotional farewell. According to Andy Greene's recent novel, The Office: The Untold Story of the Greatest Sitcom of the 2000s, the decision for Michael to have his final official scene with Pam was deeply meaningful due to the special relationship they formed.

Warren Lieberstein, a writer on The Office, shared that it was show creator Greg Daniels who made sure Michael's final scene was with Pam. He mentioned the pair's "strange emotional connection" before adding that Michael always counted on Pam. Fellow writer, Peter Ocko, reiterated that notion by claiming Pam "had the capacity to cut through the bullshit with him and let him grow in a way that the other characters couldn't." He also referenced the pair's genuine connection, which made it a priority for the characters to share one last scene together before Michael moved away.

The airport scene was a callback to the last episode of the UK version of The Office, but rather than mirror a romantic moment between Tim and Dawn, it was a way to focus on Michael and Pam's friendship. Though that bond could have continued after Michael left, it would no longer be displayed on-screen. Since Michael took his microphone off before walking through the airport, viewers didn't hear what Pam said. Fischer later confirmed that it was a personal message to Carell about how much she would miss working with him.

Some may argue that the airport scene wasn't Michael's final scene in The Office since he appeared in the series finale. Technically that's true, but Carell's return was in a guest capacity and much of the cast and crew weren't even informed of the surprise. That said, Michael's scripted final scene came alongside Pam in one of the most emotional moments in the show's history.
