An eBay seller is giving fans of Fantastic Four a chance to get their hands on a unique, and perhaps unsettling, original prop: the head of the Thing’s costume. Played by Michael Chiklis in the 2005 film, his rendition of The Thing was just one of the four blue-clad superheroes in one of Marvel’s most mediocre adaptations of the Fantastic Four characters. The movie from Tim Story hasn’t had a lot of staying power and is not considered canon in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the film may still have a nostalgia factor for some fans, as it was Captain America star Chris Evans’ first foray into the world of Marvel.
Despite mixed critical reception, Fantastic Four received both a sequel and a reboot. The 2007 film Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer featured the original's returning actors. However, the 2015 redo introduced a brand-new team. Ironically, it also featured another notable Marvel star's first turn in the comic book franchise, as Black Panther's Michael B. Jordan played Johnny Storm/Human Torch. What's more, that's the same role Evans played in the original films.
Recently, an eBay storefront with the username entertain_me posted images of the head of the Thing costume. The costume piece was initially listed at nearly $8,000 Canadian (just over $6,000 USD), but has now dropped to $6,400 Canadian, approximately $4,787 USD. The listing includes scant details about the prop, saying only, “Marvel's Fantastic Four Thing's Head Piece Prop. This is a Head from the movie Fantastic Four by Tim Story. The head has eyes that are not fixed directly to the mask. Message us for any questions about this product.” As of this writing, the head piece has not yet been sold.
While this price tag is impressive, it’s still not entirely clear if this Thing costume piece is from the 2005 film or from a different Fantastic Four. It seems that the entertain_me storefront is a legitimate Canadian-based business that specializes in movie prop distribution, so the posting likely isn’t a purposeful fraud. But, it is possible the Thing costume has been mislabeled. In fact, some have theorized this may actually be the head from the movie’s sequel, since there are reports of the Thing costume being modified for the second film so that the head could be detachable. It seems more likely the seller just has the separate head piece from the sequel rather than having manually cut the head off the original costume.
Whatever the case, this costume piece is sure to delight some avid Marvel collector. With a new version of Fantastic Four coming to the MCU at some point, it’s possible there will be even more fans than expected looking to snatch up this rocky gentleman. As of right now, it’s just a waiting game to see which Fantastic Four fan makes it out of the bid with the Thing’s head in hand.
