Captain Marvel 2 Gets Candyman 2020 Director | Screen Rant

Marvel Studios has found its director for Captain Marvel 2 by hiring Nia DaCosta to helm Brie Larson's sequel. It took the Marvel Cinematic Universe a decade to release their first female-led solo movie, with Captain Marvel hitting theaters in early 2019. The movie was a huge success, as it made over $1 billion worldwide in the lead up to Avengers: Endgame, which also featured the return of Larson as Carol Danvers.

The success of Captain Marvel made the sequel inevitable, and it was officially announced to be in-development during San Diego Comic-Con 2019. However, it wasn't until earlier this year that Marvel Studios gave Captain Marvel 2 a 2022 release date. Progress on the sequel has been steady, though, even after reports that Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck would not return to direct it. Now, the movie has taken a major step forward and filled the void.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios has hired Nia DaCosta to direct Captain Marvel 2. DaCosta is the director of the upcoming Candyman reboot/sequel produced by Jordan Peele. According to the report, Marvel met with many filmmakers about the sequel but was the favorite for some time now. She previously directed the film Little Woods, starring Tessa Thompson and Lily James. DaCosta will direct Captain Marvel 2 based on a script by WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell.

With the addition of DaCosta, Marvel Studios has now found a director for every confirmed MCU movie with a release date. DaCosta gives Phase 4 three female directors and a second Black director after Ryan Coogler, who is returning for Black Panther 2. This announcement also comes before people around the world get a chance to see what DaCosta created with Candyman, which would've been out by now if it wasn't for coronavirus delays. Her new movie is now scheduled to be released in October, so DaCosta could transition to working fulltime on Captain Marvel 2 afterward.

Since Captain Marvel 2 is still two years away, details on the project have been kept under wraps so far. It has been reported that the movie will be set in the present day of the MCU, which will be 2024 at least after Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home. What has yet to be revealed are what other MCU characters will appear alongside Carol Danvers in the sequel. The adult Monica Rambeau, who will be played by Candyman star Teyonah Parris in WandaVision, was already likely to appear, while fans want to see Kamala Khan join after Ms. Marvel. And, with DaCosta previously working with Tessa Thompson, maybe Valkyrie could make an appearance as well.
