Dexter: 5 Couples Fans Loved (& 5 We Hated) | ScreenRant

Showtime's Dexter is now one of the most popular and original American crime drama series, and also one of the best ones. Dexter might be a serial killer, but that never stopped him from having a normal life and, thus, almost genuine relationships. Because of his complex personality - and perhaps a need to feel accepted, he often ends up in particular but fascinating relationships (as it often happens with characters from this genre).

The people surrounding him, such as his sister or co-workers, often inspire him and guide him in his human relationships; but relationships aren't easy even for the normal characters. Here are some of the most loved and most hated couples of the series.

10 Hated: Dexter and Lila

Despite what Lila West used to claim, the two of them could have never worked together - and in fact, they didn't. Dexter was in a vulnerable moment, as he was trying to find a way to stop killing and to get over his childhood trauma.

Lila has always been a bad person and, therefore, got obsessed with the idea of meeting her soulmate, someone just like her. There were the chemistry and passion until she started stalking him. Dexter, however, wasn't into killing innocents and felt something stronger for Rita.

9 Loved: Debra and Joey

Debra has never been exactly the best at handling relationships, sort of like Dexter, but in a different way. However, despite the ups and downs, her relationship with Joey was supposed to be endgame.

Joey Quinn looked after her, cared for her, and grieved her when she died; she realized too late how much Quinn loved her. Before her death, they also got engaged and were so close to happiness and stability.

8 Hated: Debra and Rudy

Debra and Rudy used to be a loving, charming, and passionate couple; at least that's what it looked like before he turned out to be a serial killer. He used her to get to Dexter, almost tried to kill her, and obviously never loved her. It's easy to see why it's a terrible and toxic couple.

He left Deb, who did not deserve to be involved in a story she didn't even know about, with serious trauma and terrible heartbreak.

7 Loved: Dexter and Lumen

Dexter and Lumen didn't stay together for a long time but still had a very special bond. She had survived the same predators that Dexter was hunting, and they met while she was trying to get her revenge. At that moment, a strong allegiance was born.

The more they worked together, the more they got to know each other, and the closer they got. He had met someone who could understand his trauma and urges for the very first time.

6 Hated: Dexter and Debra

One of the weirdest plot twists was when Debra suddenly realized she is in love with Dexter, her adopted brother who she grew up with, thanks to a suggestion of her therapist. She confessed her feelings to him and got rejected, but a part of the public seems to enjoy the romantic addition to their relationship.

However, Dexter, besides being her brother and a serial killer, was also directly linked or the cause of most of her traumas. It started when he would steal her father-daughter time childhood, moved on to Rudy, and then her death.

5 Loved: Dexter and Hannah

Dexter and Hannah had a very particular, passionate bond. The first thing that would make you think that they're great together is they're both serial killers with a code.

They don't have to hide anything from each other, they share the same values (for instance: never harm an innocent), and they met when they both were alone and needed someone new. This might explain why they clicked and fell in love so quickly. Dexter trusted her so much that he decided to entrust her his son, Harrison Morgan. She was the only woman whom he loved after Rita.

4 Hated: LaGuerta and Angel

Initially, Angel Batista and Marìa LaGuerta seemed like a cute couple that could potentially last. Things used to be exciting and simple, but their relationship started escalating soon after their marriage.

Angel was too jealous and impulsive, while LaGuerta too selfish and overpowering. He caused the first problems by almost stalking her, and she ended it for good and asked for a divorce to secure herself a promotion.

3 Loved: Debra and Anton

Debra Morgan and Anton Briggs didn't last too long, mostly because her heart already belonged to someone else. It was a time in which she was particularly messed up, which could explain why she handled him so poorly.

She and Anton had chemistry from the first moment they met, and he was quite a chill and caring guy. He was also a fresh start, someone new and different that respected her, which is why they were a good couple.

2 Hated: Rita and Paul

Anyone who watched the show knows why these two should have never ended up together. Paul was violent and extremely abusive to her, both physically and verbally. After getting out of jail, he had tried to gain back her trust and be a father to their children, however, he was still unstable, cunning, and manipulative.

He forever marked both Rita and his children. It was empowering to see Rita stand up to him and get her life together after all the pain she went through.

1 Loved: Rita and Dexter

Rita was an innocent, kind soul and Dexter a serial killer; this is the principal factor that might suggest they shouldn't be a couple. Dexter wasn't, indeed, good enough for her, but he still would have never hurt her or her children and tried his best to protect them. He learned so much about humanity, family, and love from her.

He didn't fall at first sight, but he grew fond of her with time and got attached to Rita, Astor, and Cody. They all looked after each other as they became a family and had another child together. He completely fell for her and realized her importance too late, shortly before she was murdered. After her death, he went completely crazy for quite a while.
