Official screenshots for the release version of Marvel’s Avengers have leaked, including a possible look at the in-game microtransaction store. Publisher Square Enix has promised that players won’t have to pay for any of the heroes that will be coming to the team-based action RPG, but there will still be plenty of alternate character skins and nameplates available to purchase post-release.
Fans have been getting a taste of what Marvel’s Avengers has to offer all month long thanks to the game’s beta testing period, which has been spread out over the past two weekends. Player reactions are mixed so far; while some have praised the game's plot and the varied feel of each character (with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel being especially fun to play), others remain wary of the seemingly repetitive combat and online connectivity issues that prevented some players from being able to log in at all. Luckily, Marvel’s Avengers still has time for some polish ahead of its release on September 4th, and recent screenshots shows that the game is coming along quite well.
Posted by Reddit user Dirrty4U, the new batch of screenshots for Marvel’s Avengers features characters like Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, and the apparently not deceased Captain America in the game’s Helicarrier-like hub base. The image with Ms. Marvel is especially interesting, as it features the young Inhuman standing in front of some kind of shop area. A screen in the back of the image showing what appear to be alternate costumes for the Avengers make it likely that this is how players will purchase microtransactions - an assessment shared by other Reddit users in the post's comments.
While the in-game purchases in Marvel’s Avengers will be purely cosmetic, developer Crystal Dynamics has promised that a multitude of popular Marvel superheroes will be added to the game post-launch. Fan favorites like Hawkeye and Spider-Man (who is slated to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive) have already been confirmed, and recent leaks imply that equally popular characters like She-Hulk and War-Machine will be joining the fight after the game hits store shelves next month. Fans will get one last chance to sample Marvel’s Avengers before it hits stores during the final round of beta testing this weekend, which will be open to all platforms and players.
These new Marvel’s Avengers screenshots look great, and the idea of having the game’s online store be a part of the in-game S.H.I.E.L.D. base is a fun touch. While fans might still have some legitimate issues with the game as it nears its upcoming release on September 4th, the fact that its microtransactions are only for cosmetic items and not actual characters and story content remains a commendable goodwill gesture in this day and age.
Marvel's Avengers will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on September 4th, 2020.
