A Nightmare on Elm Street star Robert Englund is releasing his own coffee brew. Englund became known as a horror movie icon for playing Freddy Krueger in the film series. The original low-budget 1984 film unexpectedly became a success, turning into a pop culture phenomenon that led to Englund reprising his role multiple times after. His portrayal of the menacing and darkly humorous villain who haunted the teenagers of Elm Street in their dreams was legendary in the '80s horror genre.
Throughout his career, Englund has played dozens of supporting roles in TV shows and movies, working alongside actors like Lillian Gish, James Earl Jones, Burt Reynolds, Susan Sarandon, Henry Fonda, and Jeff Bridges. He's also had a successful voice-over career playing comic book villains in video games and animated shows. However, Englund was never away from Freddy for too long, as he continuously returned as his character for sequels, video games, and a spin-off TV series. Englund eventually said goodbye to Freddy and ruled out returning for another film. His last movie appearance as Freddy was in 2003's crossover face-off Freddy vs Jason. He then went onto reprise his role as Freddy in a cameo appearance on the ABC sitcom The Goldbergs. Though Englund hung up his razor gloves and fedora, he's still subtly incorporating his character into his latest business venture.
Dead Sled Coffee announces they are teaming up with Englund to launch his own signature coffee brew. After working on the secret collaboration with the actor over several months, the company wrote on their site:
Over the past couple/few months or so, we’ve been sending Robert different coffees from both our existing line, and new roasts that we’ve been conjuring up. All of which have been absolutely delicious and we all think you’re going to love the finished product. Working with Robert has been an incredible experience. He’s such a likable and kind person, and his ideas along with his enthusiasm shows just how excited he is for this coffee. It’s also been surreal for me personally. Being a lifelong fan of the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise, I had to contain the fan side of me on a couple occasions. On both the personal and professional side, it’s been such an amazing and humbling experience.
The project is the latest of Dead Sled's artist collaboration coffees. They previously partnered with Ska band The Toasters and also honored Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, and Vampire with their own brews. While Dead Sled made the official announcement Thursday, Englund has been teasing the collaboration on his Twitter account throughout the summer, including this week. He called it "strong enough to keep you awake," in reference to his iconic character. No artwork, brew flavor details or launch date for the new project have been announced yet, but the company hinted at limited edition items only available with a pre-order.
It seems very fitting that Englund is getting his own signature coffee brew. Not falling asleep was the only way to survive Freddy's killings, and now he's helping people stay awake. Freddy fans will be excited to see Englund's latest project and how it honors the dream demon. Though his name will forever be synonymous with Freddy Krueger, going from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise to launching his own coffee brew could be a nice change of pace for Englund.
