Remedy Has More Games In Control & Alan Wake Universe Planned

Remedy Entertainment, developer of Control and Alan Wake, says that these two titles form the basis of a connected universe that will see multiple titles in the future. This announcement comes hot on the heels of a recent announcement trailer for AWE, the newest expansion for Control and the first one that officially crosses over with Alan Wake.

Control launched in August last year and despite a few issues at launch, it earned a considerable following, and enough renown to win multiple Game of the Year awards. Fans and critics lauded the title for its satisfying combat and its suite of enjoyable supernatural abilities. It also earned acclaim for its surreal setting and storyline. Even in the base game, a connection to Alan Wake was heavily implied through Easter eggs scattered throughout the environment. The trailer for Control's upcoming AWE expansion heavily features the titular character from Alan Wake, confirming this connection beyond a doubt.

Following the release of the trailer during a recent PlayStation State of Play stream, Remedy took to its own website to share further news about the connection between these two titles. Remedy confirms that the new expansion is the first title to establish what it's calling the "Remedy Connected Universe," a shared setting likely similar to the wildly successful and oft-copied Marvel Cinematic Universe. This not only confirms that Alan Wake and Control take place in the same universe, but that future projects will share this setting as well, building on the mysterious and surreal lore introduced in the two pre-existing games.

According to Remedy, the dream of this shared universe has existed for over 10 years, which means it was likely conceived during the development of Alan Wake. The AWE expansion is identified by the developer as "the first concrete step" on the road to establishing this universe. In addition to sharing its excitement for the project, Remedy also announced that the team was already working on a new game to be set in the connected universe, which could be a sequel to Alan Wake or Control, or an entirely new game altogether.

Control's eerie setting was a major part of the game's success and a huge reason it stood out in the months leading up to its release. The imposing Brutalist hallways of the Federal Bureau of Control's Oldest House provided a deeply memorable backdrop for the equally fascinating aberrations and anomalies players encountered throughout the game. If Remedy can consistently deliver intrigue and mystery this compelling, then fans will have a lot more to look forward to from the developer after the release of Control's AWE expansion on August 27th, 2020.
