Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Vs. Apple Watch 5: The Best Smartwatch To Buy?

The new Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 is now here but how does it compare with other smartwatches and specifically, the Apple Watch 5? The Galaxy Watch 3 became available for purchase on August 6 in most areas of the world, and the Apple Watch Series 5 was released on Sept. 20, 2019. For many, the choice between which smartwatch to buy will come down to deciding between these two options.

Despite almost a year’s difference in release dates, these watches offer very similar features and are priced very similarly as well. Apple’s products have often been at the forefront of technological innovation, and the most recent Apple Watch is no different. Samsung’s newest smartwatch also has many unique features, as well as many similar attributes to the Apple Watch.

Both the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Apple Watch share many features. For example, they both include GPS and provide options for adding cellular access. They include fall detection capabilities, allowing the user to call for emergency services from the watch after suffering a fall. Both watches offer texting, calling and application features allowing the wearer to feel comfortable leaving their phone at home, while largely relying on their smartwatch. The Apple Watch currently offers heart rate-tracking capabilities, which the Galaxy Watch does not yet. Although Samsung is expected to add heart rate-tracking to the Galaxy Watch 3 soon for users in the United States and South Korea.

Both of these watches offer many different built-in health trackers and features. They both include workout trackers to help users to set specific fitness goals and work towards meeting them. The Apple Watch has metrics explicitly designed for swimmers, and the Apple Watch itself can be submerged up to 50 meters. The Galaxy Watch 3’s connection with the Samsung Health app means that it has access to a multitude of workouts that can be streamed to a TV or used from the wrist. The Apple Watch has systems for detecting noises that will harm the user’s ears, as well as menstrual cycle-tracking. The Galaxy Watch 3 has a built-in sleep tracker, whereas the Apple Watch generally needs to be charged each night. The Galaxy Watch 3 can also help to detect your stress levels and offers exercises to help address the stress.

There are many aesthetic differences between the Apple Watch and the Galaxy Watch 3. The Galaxy Watch 3 offers a sleek design that looks similar to a traditional watch. It has a rotating bezel, traditional straps, coming in bronze, black, and silver finishes. The Apple Watch’s band and case can be customized with thousands of combinations. These cases and bands do affect the cost of the watch as a whole, with the lowest cost option starting at $399, and the most expensive options at $1,499. The Apple Watch also features an always-on retina display that dims when it is not being looked at, which also contributes to it’s shorter battery life. The Apple Watch comes in 40mm and 44mm size options whereas the Galaxy Watch 3 comes in 41mm and 45mm size options.

Either of these watches will make a great smartwatch that is adept at both health and phone-related tasks. When deciding which one is right for you, it’s also good to remember that both of these watches can download apps that can offer more features or track specific workouts that the other may not. Although the largest difference between the two smartwatches is the aesthetic choice. The rotating bezel and modern design of the Galaxy Watch 3 creates a professional and classy feel that can’t be matched by the Apple Watch. Additionally, the Apple Watch does have more modern and classy bands and casings, but all those options are above $1,000, whereas all of the Galaxy Watch 3 options are in the $399-$479 range. The Apple Watch does offer some lesser quality band and case options within that price range, but none are very classy, and most look more similar to a fitness tracker.

When making a final decision, it’s best to look at which features are most important to you and which physical activities are the most important for you to track. The iOS-based operating system used in the Apple Watch versus the Tizen operating system powering the Galaxy Watch 3 may also be a deciding factor.
