The Old Guard Writer Confirms Sequel Discussions | Screen Rant

The Old Guard's writer confirms there have been discussions about The Old Guard 2 happening, but he isn't sure when a final decision will be made. Netflix launched a new potential franchise this summer with the release of The Old Guard. The film stars Charlize Theron as Andy, the leader of a group of immortals who protect humanity and is based on the comic book by Greg Rucka. Gina Prince-Bythewood directed The Old Guard based on a script by Rucka.

With an A-list star in Theron and plenty of action, The Old Guard became an immediate hit for Netflix once it began streaming. The movie received mostly positive reviews and quickly topped the services' daily Top 10 charts. It didn't take long for The Old Guard to claim a place in Netflix's record book as one of the streaming service's biggest movies ever. This response has left many wondering when The Old Guard 2 will happen, even though Netflix has yet to confirm plans for a sequel.

During a recent interview with DiscussingFilm, Greg Rucka was asked about the status of The Old Guard 2. Rucka's source material for The Old Guard already extends beyond what the first movie covered, so the franchise potential already exists. Fans of the film will be pleased to hear that talks about a sequel have taken place, but Rucka cautions that he doesn't know when Netflix will make a final decision about whether or not to make The Old Guard 2.

"Yeah, certainly. There have been discussions, nothing is confirmed, and I don’t think there will be a decision made as to whether or not another one is in the offering for a while yet. The decision to make another one is going to be made by people who are far outside of my lane. If they decide to do another one, I am absolutely there for it."

It shouldn't come as a surprise that The Old Guard 2 discussions are taking place already. The movie clearly found an audience on Netflix, and the ending sets up where a sequel can go. Those involved with The Old Guard have even expressed their desires to make another entry. Prince-Bythewood mentioned in the past that there are ideas for a trilogy, while Theron made it well-known that she wants to play Andy again in a sequel.

With The Old Guard's creative team being interested in a new installment and the first film proving to be quite popular on Netflix, it would be quite surprising if The Old Guard 2 discussions don't pick up to confirm the franchise's future. Interest in The Old Guard 2 isn't just high because of the quality of the first film, but also because of how the original movie set up the next story. There are many unanswered questions by the end of The Old Guard that a sequel can tackle, with the return of Quynh an enticing tease of what will come next. Now we'll just have to wait and see if (or when) Netflix decides to make The Old Guard 2 a reality.
