Thor Reimagined as a ‘90s Marvel Movie Stars Jim Carrey & Kevin Sorbo

A new fan poster for a 1998 version of Thor casts Hercules actor Kevin Sorbo as the God of Thunder and Jim Carrey as Loki, the God of Mischief. The actual Thor was released in 2011 and starred Australian Chris Hemsworth as the Thor, with British actor Tom Hiddleston taking on the role of Loki. Natalie Portman (Jane Foster), Anthony Hopkins (Odin), and Stellan Skarsgard (Dr. Selvig) rounded out the cast. The movie, which was directed by Kenneth Branagh, was a crucial part of building the Marvel Cinematic Universe and set Thor up as one of the six original Avengers in the MCU.

Both Hemsworth and Hiddleston have since achieved iconic status in the MCU, appearing in multiple entries across all three phases of the franchise. The movie also spawned two sequels with varying degrees of success. Thor: The Dark World was a relative failure for the MCU, while the Taika Waititi-directed Thor Ragnarok reinvented the character as a more humorous God, and made almost a billion dollars. Waititi, Hemsworth, and Portman are all returning for the upcoming third sequel, Thor: Love and Thunder.

Now, Reddit user and artist jasonandwho has created a throwback fan poster, imagining what Thor would have looked like had it been made in 1998. The gothic-style poster looks like an alternate cover for a Power Metal band from the 1980s, which is totally appropriate for the time period. The artist casts Sorbo, who was at the height of his fame thanks to his starring role on the Hercules TV show, as the titular God, while Carrey is the God of Mischief. Additionally, Heather Graham appears as Jane Foster, and gruff, tough-guy actor Charlton Heston takes on the role of Nick Fury. You can see the poster below:

This is the third MCU poster that the artist has re-imagined as a 1990s movie, after creating fan posters for Iron Man and Iron Man 2 in the past week. The casting of Sorbo may seem like a strange choice in hindsight since the actor hasn't had very many significant roles except for a few faith-based films in recent years. However, it makes sense if fans remember just how popular Hercules was in the late 90s. Additionally, Sorbo was in incredible shape at the time and had the perfect physique to play the Asgardian. Carrey's casting, too, is perfect. In 1998 he was still playing wild, comedic roles, and he would have embodied the mischievous villain perfectly.

Graham as Foster and Heston as Fury is less believable, though. Heston might have worked as the leader of SHIELD, but he likely never would have taken the role in the first place. And while Graham was a fairly big star, she was likely too much of a sex symbol at the time to play Foster, who is not just a romantic interest for Thor, but also a character required to hold her own. However, overall, this movie looks like it would have been pure 1990s B-grade cheese and is a great dose of nostalgia.
