10 Present-Day Directors With The Most Number Of Oscar Wins

The time period from the 1910s to 1960s is commonly referred to as the "Golden Age of Hollywood", but that should not in any way undermine the achievements of the modern-day cinema industry. In any era, there are always a number of filmmakers and artists who are giving it their all and creating creative masterpieces. The Academy Awards, colloquially called Oscars, first started back in 1929 and over the years has grown into the most prestigious award ceremony in the world of movies.

Although an Oscar isn't an absolute measurement of how good a filmmaker or film is, it can function as a good point of reference when comparing. This list looks at 10 present-day directors with the most number of Oscar wins.

10 Christopher Nolan - 10 Oscars

Christopher Nolan is the only director on this list who has yet to win a "Best Director" or even a "Best Picture" award and its something that baffles almost everyone who is familiar with his writing and directing style.

Nearly all of his films have been critical and commercial hits, and although he has earned a fair share of nominations the Academy Awards always seem to overlook him when it comes to the final stage. But his films have won in other categories, such as Inception and Dunkirk who have 4 and 3 Oscars under their name respectively.

9 Alfonso Cuarón - 10 Oscars

Mexican film director Alfonso Cuarón has won 2 Best Director Oscars in the last decade, one for his 2013 film Gravity and the other for 2018's Roma. The former, a sci-fi thriller about an astronaut stranded in space and her journey back to Earth, won a whopping 7 Oscars and also made the director Alfonso Cuarón the first Mexican filmmaker to win the Oscar for Best Director.

His 2000 martial art film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, with the same number of Oscar wins as Life of Pi is considered one of the most influential films of its time. Other than this, his film Brokeback Mountain featuring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal also won 3 Oscars.

4 Peter Jackson - 20 Oscars

J. R. R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is the single highest-selling book of all time with over 150 million copies sold, but what really took its popularity to astronomical heights is Peter Jackson's original trilogy.

He single-handedly created one of the highest-grossing franchises in present-day Hollywood, big-screen adaptation of a book that was considered too ambitious to be made a movie on. The franchise as a whole has grossed nearly $6 Billion and has won a total of 17 Oscars between them. His 2005 monster movie King Kong also remains one of his most iconic films, which won 3 Oscars and many other awards for its outstanding visual effects.

3 Martin Scorsese - 20 Oscars

While success in the careers of many directors (both critical and commercial) nowadays comes from working on massive Hollywood blockbusters and franchises, Martin Scorsese is a director of artistic means who only deals in singular masterpieces. The fact that he is the living director with the most number of Best Director nominations is proof of this.

His film Terminator 2: Judgment Day is known among many as the ultimate action movie and also earned 4 Oscars.

1 Steven Spielberg - 32 Oscars

In sheer terms of Oscar wins, no director currently working in the industry comes even close to the achievements of Steven Spielberg. His influence on the modern-day cinema industry is undeniable, and it is no surprise that he is also the highest-grossing director of all time.

His 1975 film Jaws introduced the very concept of "summer blockbusters" and won 3 Oscars. Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan absolutely defined what heights the war-drama genre could reach, winning 7 and 5 Oscars respectively including Best Director in both cases. 4 Oscars were earned by both Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T., and 3 by Jurassic Park.
