10 Detroit Metal City

It may surprise some fans to find out that Aggretsuko isn't the first Japanese story about someone who has a secret life of singing death metal. Detriot Metal City is a black comedy manga that told such as story before Aggretsuko ever did. The manga got an anime OVA of 12 episodes that are each 13 minutes.

Instead of an anthropomorphic red panda, the story follows a human named Soichi Negishi who is a shy young man who dreams of being a pop musician. However, it is his death metal that pays the bills. He lead a double life, one as the crude lead singer for Detroit Metal City and another of a gentle and timid man with pop musician dreams.

Unlike Aggretsuko, the show doesn't get into mature themes like crushing sexism and the heavy drama of dating. Instead, it sticks to the fluffy comedy side of things such as having awkward conversations with customers about the books they are buying. Like Aggretsuko, it also as a pretty unique style in how its main cast of characters are not human.

8 Bojack Horseman

If you loved Aggretsuko for its mature themes, comedy, and animal characters, then Bojack Horseman is a good choice. It is a show that has all that, but with a Hollywood American flavor. It is also more cynical. The show came to an end at the beginning of 2020, but left itself quite a legacy in the genre of sadcoms (that is a rising genre of both sadness and comedy). Even its supporting characters are hilarious.

The characters may not have that cute Japanese style, but it does majorly mature themes such as racism, sexism, self-destructive behavior, and the human condition. In comparison, Aggretsuko can come across as more lighthearted.

7 Beastars

If you like power struggles, romance, and animal characters, Beastars has all that. The show has 12 episodes so far, and is actually often compared to Zootopia in terms predator versus prey kind of story. Aggretsuko doesn't have that, but what they do have in common is relationship drama, societal pressures, and anthropomorphic characters.

6 Princess Jellyfish

She forms a friendship with a boy who likes to cross-dress, and together they help each other through relationships and drama. Its a romantic comedy, and also explores gender identity in a way that was quite fresh for its time.

5 Osomatsu-San

In terms of Aggretsuko's comedy about struggling in an adult world, Osomatsu-san shares that theme in heaps with a heavy flavor of absurdism. Next to Retsuko, these characters really do not have their lives together at all. The characters are sextuplets who still live with their parents and are struggling to find where they fit into in the world.

There is not really a plot in Osomtasu-san. Viewers are just encouraged to join the ride and laugh at their shenanigans.

4 Princess Tutu

Princess Tutu is a good suggestion for those who loved the romance, female lead, and animal characters the most in Aggretsuko. Princess Tutu is really a magical girl anime, but it is unique in many ways. First of all, the hero is actually a duck who can turn into a girl who can turn into a magical girl. Secondly, many other characters are animals as well. The show is also pretty romantically charged.

Major differences with Aggretsuko is it is not a comedy and it is not slice-of-life. It is magical in nature and follows a significant plot.

3 Tuca And Bertie

Tuca and Bertie is a bit of a hidden gem. It was made by the same team that created Bojack Horseman, but is a show that doesn't live in its shadow and is unique in its genre and characters.
