5 Things Gossip Girl Did Better Than PLL (& Vice Versa)

Two of the most popular teen drama TV shows of all time are Gossip Girl and Pretty Little Liars. While one focused on a group of characters in New York and one focused in on a small, charming town called Rosewood, these shows shared several big similarities, like the mysteries and drama that pulled fans in week after week.

Even though it is a tough decision, everyone probably has their favorite show out of these two, for many different reasons. Here are five things Gossip Girl did better than PLL and five things PLL did better than Gossip Girl.

10 Gossip Girl Had Super Steamy Romances

A must-have element in this genre is romantic relationships, and Gossip Girl brought the heat in this area! Right from the start, Blair was mad at Serena for hooking up with Nate, Dan had a crush on Serena, and Chuck ended up sleeping with Blair before Nate.

No matter what was going on within the story, there was always some new excitement in love lives, such as breakups, hookups, first dates, and weddings. And while PLL obviously had some fan favorite romances, the relationships on this series were far more steamy.

9 Pretty Little Liars Focused On True Friendship

Struggles at school, problems at home, and the torture and torment put out by A were just some of the challenges with which the Liars had to deal. Through it all and no matter what, though, they had each other.

Yes, there were loving family members and significant others, but the secrets that were held and the bumps that were overcome bonded these girls in a huge way. Blair, Chuck, Serena, Dan, and Nate were certainly BFFs, too, but they also hurt each other in ways that Spencer, Aria, Hanna, and Emily did not.

8 Gossip Girl Brought The Drama

The first word that surely comes to mind when thinking of Gossip Girl is drama, and it delivered on this in every way possible.

There was lying and cheating. There was a pretend cousin. There was an ongoing popularity contest. There was the question of if Chuck/Blair and Dan/Serena would ever really be together. And there was the intrigue of this anonymous blogger blasting out rumors and secrets all the time.

7 Pretty Little Liars Was Full Of Mystery

For Pretty Little Liars, mystery was the number-one selling point, as everyone on the show and at home was trying to figure out who A was.

A potential suspect would arise, but then there would be a murder or some other shock, and that person would be ruled out. When Charlotte was finally revealed, it seemed everything was solved… until the game started again!

6 Gossip Girl Was Set In A Stylish & Glam Place

Both of the shows’ settings had major perks, but for many viewers, the glam of Manhattan could not be beat.

And it wasn’t just anywhere in NYC: It was the Upper East Side, as this series focused on affluent characters who attended glamorous schools, parties, fashion shows, and functions. Tuning in to see iconic locations and outfits was half the fun.

5 Pretty Little Liars Brought Danger To A Quaint Setting

On the other hand, Rosewood was oh so special; it had its picturesque downtown square with its gazebo and white church (yes, the same square used in Gilmore Girls!), but it was full of danger.

The fact that all of this could happen in such a sweet and small place and to such “normal” people was part of what made this show so thrilling and chilling.

4 Gossip Girl Dove Deep Into Real-Life Issues

Teen dramas usually touch upon topics like pregnancy, substance abuse, bullying, body image, suicide/death, and mental health, and Gossip Girl dove deep into some of these.

Some stand-out examples include Serena’s and Eric’s time at The Ostroff Center, Georgina telling Dan that they had a child together, Blair and Chuck getting in a wreck (which caused Blair to lose a pregnancy), Jenny’s downward spiral after rising to the top at school and Nate’s family telling him some pretty big lies.

3 Pretty Little Liars Had More Diverse Characters

Another positive thing about Pretty Little Liars was the diverse characters. As mentioned, Gossip Girl focused on this elite group in this specific place.

But PLL was in a more down-to-earth setting, with a bit more diversity shown when it came to race, sexual orientation, religion, and socioeconomic status.

2 Gossip Girl Lured People In With A Narrator

A final element done well by Gossip Girl was the use of a narrator. As true fans know, Kristen Bell voiced Gossip Girl, though no one knew the identity of the blogger until the end of the story.

Hearing her voice and being able to get recaps, all ending in “XOXO”, was a real highlight, and it has gone down in history!

1 Pretty Little Liars Was Known For Cliffhangers

A final detail that PLL should be recognized for would be those epic cliffhangers. At the time and in the moment, they were quite frustrating, as a person would have to wait a whole week or, if it was the end of a season, months and months to find out what happened next.

They were legendary though, and all the twists and turns kept fans on the edges of their seats!
