Agents of SHIELD: 5 Times Coulson Was The Best Character (& 5 Times It Was Daisy)

Marvel's Agents of SHIELD has a lot of amazing characters, most of whom have gotten their own individual moments to shine, but the two characters that have been the primary focus of the show since the beginning have been Agent Coulson and Daisy Johnson.

Both Coulson and Daisy have been at the center of some of the show's most important storylines, and both have had awesome character moments that remind the audience why they're great. Almost any season features standout moments like that, but there are some that stand above the others.

10 Coulson: Becoming Ghost Rider

The finale of season 4 was full of a lot of the show's best moments, one of which being when Coulson confronted AIDA for the final time. AIDA seemed pretty much unstoppable considering she had given herself Inhuman powers of teleportation, electrokinesis, and healing, with the only person able to harm her being Robbie Reyes.

After she was shot numerous times by Simmons, Coulson grabbed her ,revealing that he had allowed himself to be possessed by the spirit of vengeance and defeated her by burning her alive, turning her into a pile of ash.

9 Daisy: Stopping Talbot From Destroying Earth

In the season finale of season 5, Daisy faces off against General Talbot after his mind had been corrupted by Hydra and the Gravitonium in his system, which causes him to go looking for more of the substance buried in the Earth while causing mass destruction that would likely result in the Earth being cracked apart.

After attempting to appeal to his better nature and failing to get through to him, Talbot forced Daisy to continue the battle. It was an epic fight that came to a close when Daisy blasted Talbot into space after he tried to absorb her and her powers.

8 Coulson: The Framework Broadcast

Another major plot point of season 4 was that AIDA managed to trap everyone in the framework where Hydra is in power by changing a core element of each of their lives, which made Coulson an Inhuman-hating history teacher. After Daisy manages to convince Coulson of the truth about the real world, they both become members of the resistance.

They would later try to turn people against Hydra through a media broadcast, with Coulson representing the organization on-air, presenting his badge and declaring that he was "Phil Coulson. Agent of SHIELD". Coulson has always been the face of the agency, so it only makes sense makes sense that he would be the one to rally everyone, even in the alternate world.

7 Daisy: Stopping Nathaniel Mallick

Daisy has fought a lot of people over the course of the show, but Nathaniel Mallick might just be the strongest, considering the two share the same powers due to him stealing them earlier in the season.

Daisy had a lot of reasons to want Mallick dead, considering he killed her mother and tortured her, Simmons, and Deke. The final battle between them took place aboard the Chronicom ship and ended with her sacrificing her own life to destroy it, saving the Earth once again in the process.

6 Coulson: Sealing The Rift

In season 5, the explosion of the space, time, and creation monoliths created a dimensional rift referred to by the team as the fear dimension in the lower level of the Lighthouse. After some debate, Coulson goes down and attempt to close the rift using the device Fitz created to seal it.

While down there, he was confronted by a version of Mike Peterson that tried to convince him that nothing he experienced over the past years was fake and that he was still on the table after being stabbed by Loki. He eventually realized that he was actually confronting his fear of death, and then the real Deathlok showed up and the two fought together against the various fear manifestations to close the rift.

5 Daisy: Destroying The Shrike

Daisy has done a lot of cool things with her powers over the many seasons of the show. One of the best displays of her abilities was in season 6 when she, Deke, Snowflake, and May were stuck in Sarge's truck, which was heading towards the Shrike tower and was set to explode it.

In addition to keeping the Shrike from entering the truck by disintegrating them and reducing them to dust without very much effort at all, she also managed to contain an explosion from an atomic bomb after it had gone off, saving everyone on board.

4 Coulson: His Re-Introduction

In one of the first scenes of the series, Grant Ward is being interviewed and states that, because he's clearance level 6, he knows that Coulson was killed by Loki in the Battle of New York.

However, before he can continue, Coulson himself emerges from the shadows to reveal he was still alive, stating "Welcome to level 7", admitting that the corner was dark and he couldn't help himself. It is one of the show's coolest and funniest moments that showcases iconic Coulson humor as well as set the tone for the rest of the series.

3 Daisy: Rescuing Joey

The end of season 2 ended with the Terrigen crystals that the Inhumans were planning on using sunk into the ocean. Season 3 addresses the fallout of that moment, and started off by showing the destruction caused by a new Inhuman with the ability to melt metal named Joey Gutierrez.

The audience sees Joey causing havoc and he is attempting to run from his pursuers, later revealed as the ATCU, before he's rescued by Daisy, who seems to be in full control of her powers. Showcasing Daisy being more comfortable and experienced as an Inhuman and as an agent was a perfect way to kick off the new season and showed her growth as a character.

2 Coulson: Destroying The Chronicom Ship

When Coulson first discovered the Chronicom ship after saving Agent Stoner, he boarded it and had a conversation with the predictor, Sybil, which he ends by telling her "dying was kind of my superpower" before blowing up the ship and himself along with it.

Although the Chronicoms would later come back in full force, the destruction to their main vessel set them back quite a bit and allowed the SHIELD team to regain a lead in the fight against them.

1 Daisy: LMD Fight

When the Playground was overtaken by LMDs after AIDA and Radcliffe replaced the majority of the team aside from Daisy and Simmons, the two were tasked with regaining control. As a result, Daisy was forced to battle against LMD versions of Mace, Mack, and Coulson.

Since she was without her gauntlets, that meant she had to rely mostly on hand to hand combat in order to take them down. They, along with a few remaining agents, were able to make it out successfully and hack their way into the framework to try and rescue the others.
